FLEXZED Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Hey Guys i need some help, i have a set of vented disc calipers ( ln 106) and gave them to a so called brake specialists who informed me that it would be $65 + parts to re kit them with new seals etc Received a phone call after 3 days and they tell me it will cost $480 approx to redo them, so i said NO THANKS. went there to pick them up and they tried to charge me $13 for freight i said NO THANKS again and walked out BUT there where nice enough to have pulled them apart and blast all the paint off the calipers Went to Toyota and ordered the kit cost me $72 for both calipers, MY question is i can install the kit but with the calipers pulled apart i am not sure how i should seal the 2 sides together, and is there anything i should be carefull with Thank you all in advance Loui Quote
Scoota G Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 I'm not quite understanding the "seal the two sides together " bit .... Maybe a photo of the work already done would help. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted October 5, 2010 Moderators Posted October 5, 2010 I can't quite remember which caliper I took apart, but to seal the two halves of the caliper, there was a O ring that sat in a recess in one of the caliper halves. Not sure if it was the 300ZX Sumitomo or the original zed 2 piston... Quote
Ben Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 I bought rebuild kits for my S12W calipers for about $20/side only a few months ago. There are a surplus number of the o-rings in question - the kit comes with 4, and you only use 2 per-side. Make sure you use PBR rubber grease (or equivalent) when installing the various seals - otherwise they'll bind up. Quote
zed240au Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 there is o ring in side that seals two halves together Did workshop advise why price change would be checking pistons and outer body to make sure there is no pitting in either as this would lead to leaks even with new seals know i was quote stupid price for new pistons once Quote
FLEXZED Posted October 5, 2010 Author Posted October 5, 2010 there is o ring in side that seals two halves together Did workshop advise why price change would be checking pistons and outer body to make sure there is no pitting in either as this would lead to leaks even with new seals know i was quote stupid price for new pistons once thank you guys zed240 has answered my question, i took the calipers in as a complete unit not split in 2 as they are now, i thought there would have been a o-ring to seal the 2 half's together but wasn't sure the kit i got has 8 seals and 8 dust caps for 8 pistons BUT no o-rings i don't know why the uped the price, i spoke to the previous owner of the calipers ( forum member ) and they worked well on the track , all i wanted to do was run a seal kit in them while i had them off the car. checked and double checked for pitting on the piston and piston sleeve and all look good scoota sorry but i don't know how to do pics yet but thanks Dimitri thank you you are spot on Ben thanks but i also have s12w and there are 4 pistons on each caliper and therefore need 8 seals thanks again guys if there is anymore info please let me know Loui Quote
Ben Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Perhaps I should clarify - each calliper seal kit I bought had 4-piston o-rings, 4 piston dust seals, 4 dust seal clips and 4 o-rings. Only 2 of the o-rings are needed (one per end, not one per end, per half). Quote
