luvemfast Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 Working in the garage last night transplanting the powerhouse with Benny. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the carbies on........... Ben -"Umm, are the engine mounts on the right sides?" Me- Hangs head in shame "I was wondering why it looked so vertical" Luckily it only took half hour to rectify. C'mon...... as if you've never done something stupid! Quote
RB30X Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 I may have known someone once, who in an attempt to undo the crankshaft bolt on the balancer using the breaker bar on the chasis rail technique, got it round the wrong way And I believe that same person once forgot to remove the coil lead to the dizzy doing the exact same job. Moderators Zedman240® Posted August 21, 2010 Moderators Posted August 21, 2010 Its not really a fail unless something is broken or you went all the way and ready to turn the key; When I did Surly's engine swap and fitted an electronic dizzy and started it, ran like a dog then re-fitted the points dizzy only to find I messed up the firing order on the electronic one. More of a waste of time than a fail! Quote

pauly_adams Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 the worst thing i have done is left 1 bolt in the bottom of my gbox when i was replacing my clutch, it took 2 hours for me to find where the bolt was turns out it was on the engine side of the gbox . Quote
luvemfast Posted August 21, 2010 Author Posted August 21, 2010 OK, maybe EPIC fail was a bit over the top. Still pretty funny though for a guy who has been working on Z's for over 15 years (over half my life) Quote
drifta1600 Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 has any one ever droped a socket or a bolt down into the front timing chain cover, and then had to pull the whole front off the motor off to find it, after spending a long time with a magnet trying to pull it out? i have Quote
zzzzed Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 I spend several days and nights fitting up my brand new reconditioned heads up to the vg30et in my z31 I forgot to tighten the bolt on the front of the drivers side cam wheel. The car ran beautiful for about 30 seconds until the cam wheel worked its self lose resulting in the front being snapped off the cam shaft and 3 of the brand new valves being bent and a whole arrangement of swear words bouncing around my shed so i had to start all over again Quote

Scoota G Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Chasing a Rattle in my freshly built L26 last year and it turned out to be a build of crap in the crank where the flexplate bolts on allowing me to tighten up to the specific torque but leaving the plate able to move back and forward but not by hand. Stripped the engine down twice and also had the transmission out for this. Quote

Stripped the engine down twice and also had the transmission out for this. That sort of crap drives you mad.... My epic fail is not something I did... Cleaning up the milling machine I bought, and sorting a few small issues - I fired up the electric powerfeed (which had been put on just before I picked the machine up, as the old one was cactus), and ran the table across - it hit the limit switch and kept going. Fortunately I was quick enough to hit the off switch before any damage was done, it just slid the adjustable bracket around a bit. But as far as I'm concerned, for a sparky to wire in a new powerfeed and NOT check that the switches which automatically turn it off at the end of its travel work is an epic fail... Quote
