240Z - Factory Finish Beneath Diamond Vinyl

I've bought the diamond vinyl kit for the Hornet, but before slapping on some glue and sticking it onto the tranny tunnel and rear upright riser, what was the factory finish? Is there an underlay on the metal, or do I just slap on the vinyl? How about the tranny tunnel? Is there any padding or heat or sound deadening on that under the vinyl.

I was looking into sound deadener a while ago and kept finding that this product was highly recommended, I'll probably whack some down when I get around to the interior of mine. I know Dale also found some sound deadener that was apparently pretty good, but I'm not sure what it is, or, if its Dynamat.

Dynamat is brilliant stuff.

 

Most sound deadeners will do similar jobs, but dynamat has the best sound cutting properties, not too sure on the weight yet.

 

I put a very thin layer of foam under mine as well, not sure if this is the done t hing, but it makes the vinyl that much softer, and "nice" inside the cabin, not to mention where there is a fitting, like the handbrake, or the tunnel console, the vinyl gets that "thick rich leather tuck" effect.

 

not everyones taste, but it made my interior quiet, and a touch more plush than factory, without getting to ridunkulous

I just checked out my original matting, it's still stuck to the transmission hump without the vinyl on it and it's a dense fibrous material gone a bit hard probably from age but it's 10mm thick and covers the whole hump with a 3" by 4" cutout for the hand brake and a long cutout on top from the rear end of the ash tray to the dash

I think it goes hard from a combination of age, heat and the glue they use to put the vinyl in.

Dynamat is the god stuff, and the cheaper you can get it the better.

 

This is one where i would not settle for a cheaper knockoff.  the ryda product looks genuine, not so sure abut the ebay variant.

 

the cheaper one will use other materials, that will either be heavier, or wont deaden the sound as much.

 

All i can say is do the research before you jump in, it is definitely one of those jobs you do not want to have to do twice.
