I've just got a 280zx distributor e12-80 (i believe is the code on the module part) and am looking to hook it up on my Zed (71 240) the only problem was that i was doing some reading last night and i came accross an article which said the tacho will need to be swapped out if i do this?

 

does anyone know if this is true? and/or whether there are any other solutions?

 

I'd been told it was a fairly simple swap so......

I haven't been through it myself but it seems others have used it with success.

 

You don't have to swap out your distributor my Z runs a stock 240z tach.

 

I've never had to install one myself but i don't believe it's that difficult i know that you need to bypass the balast resistor.

 

You also need a positive and negative from the coil to connect the module.

I believe you may need to pick up another coil depending on what you've got.

 

This is just going from what I've observed on my Z.

 

If you have major problems im sure one of us can take photos of our set up.

The tacho does NOT need to be swapped, my 260 runs the inductive pickup tacho (oddly, because I thought only 240s had them), and has a full EFI L28 swap in it, tacho works fine.

 

I left two existing wires connected (was that all of them? don't remember), one was a black wire with a yellow tracer, and it connects to the positive of the coil. This supplies ignition power, and I believe is part of the tacho feed. The other was a plain black on the negative of the coil. I then ran two completely new wires for the module, as described in the website below.

 

This website (http://www.geocities.com/zgarage2001/engine.html) has a little drawing of how to hookup that module to your coil, but he is incorrect (obviously) about the inductive pickup tacho not working.
