sam Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Hey guys, My engine's been running pretty rich recently and its been a while since its been looked at. I've decided to embark on this myself with the help of the Ztherapy tune up video but he focuses on a standard 240. I need to start by checking the valve clearances, etc before getting to the carbs. What differences will there be between the 240 and my 260? I think the video says its 10 and 12 for inlet and outlet. Also, the previous owner said he put a hotter cam in.. how will this effect these numbers and how can I work out the specs of it? Any other tips would be appreciated as I havent done much of this kind of stuff. Sam Quote
dazzed Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 im sure that someone who understands this will reply , i can only recomend setting the valve clearances when the engine is cold , maybe this will make a warmer to cooler camshaft, tho it may not operate as well in the winter, so maybe having a hotter camshaft in winter and using a colder camshaft in summer may help, not sure maybe im wrong but thats what my mechanic told me, hope this helps? Whittie Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Those clearances sound about right. There is not 'perfect' setting when you start changing camshafts as everything starts changing. Make sure you set the clearances hot. The metal expands and will reduce clearances when it warms up. Start with an initial setting (the ones you say sound fine) and if it's rattly, tighten till it stops. If it's not rattly loosen till it rattles and then tighten till it stops. This is what I do and it works great. Quote

Moderators Zedman240® Posted May 29, 2010 Moderators Posted May 29, 2010 Daniel is right again, a hotter cam during winter would help keep the engine warmer too. Perfect for those real cool mornings. Quote
Enzo Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Valve Clearance (hot) Inlet........0.010 in (0.25mm) Exhaust....0.012 in (0.30mm) Valve Clearance (cold) Inlet.......0.008 in (0.20mm) Exhaust...0.010 in (0.25mm) The 0.002 in difference between the hot and cold settings is for the expansion of the hot metal.
