Guys,

I have a 73 240z.

I was supposed to get the rw certificate issued for it today, but the issuer wouldn't as he couldn't find the chassis number.

I am supposed to be getting it registered tomorrow.

Can anyone tell me where there chassis number is located?

Any help is much appreciated,

thanks

Bruce

it should be stamped on the firewall just above the brake booster, I believe, unless 240s have it in a different spot to 260s. If the car has been sprayed, the numbers may have been filled....

thanks for the reply,

I had a look above the booster and there was nothing there.

I sanded it back to metal thinking it may have been filled and painted over (still nothing)

Any other thoughts?

As luck would have it, I have a photo of my 73 240Z's engine bay. I have put a red box around the chasis number to make it easier to spot. You can just make out the HS of the number. Hope this helps you out.

dropped into Vicroads this morning (Camberwell). As they don't have an inspection area they said that I should just go to the appointment (VicRoads Sunshine, this afternoon) and they will sort it out.

Fingers crossed It will work itself out.

the 3.00pm update!!!!!.

Went to Vicroads this afternoon. They had a look around under the hood looking for the chassis number. Had their screwdrivers out scratching off the paint all over the place. Couldn't find anything.

They then pulled out the book which has all the locations for chassis numbers. Looked up 240z. Low and behold, according to the book, the chassis number is recorded on the plate on the right front valance for 240z's.

So the manufacturers plate is still on there, and they are happy to go with the number on that.

rather odd that the number isn't stamped on the firewall though.... sounds dodgy to me' date=' but if the number on the build plate comes back clean, why complain, I guess.[/quote']

I have heard that Nissan did make a few cars without chassis numbers these were usually works rally cars or other racecars. They were made of thinner sheet metal (ie lighter body) however these were not meant to be sold to the public ever and I believe Nissan also would try and get them back at the end of the racing life and brake them down. Did they check the other side of the firewall it might have been a HLS30 that was coverted to RHD and the chassis number is on the other side.

They have a book, which states where all the chassis numbers are located for every model car that has been complianced in Australia. It definately states that the chassis number is located on the plate, nowhere else. They then suggested I should get it stamped somewhere on the body as well.

Their book is right.....and wrong, or perhaps more accurately, incomplete. I've owned a few 240Z's (one was a very early car and at least one other a '73) and all had the chassis number stamped into the firewall as described. It's also stamped on the manufacturers ID plate from the factory, but I've seen a lot of cars without the ID plate fitted (mostly never refitted after an engine bay re-spray).

I know of one car that had the firewall stamping removed when some major repairs were required in that area (a combination of rust and accident damage (yes it was that bad and yes the shell was recovered).

It sounds like the general consensus is that there should be a stamp on the firewall, and that my car may have been through some serious repairs.

I wouldn't get too concerned about, there's probably a simple explanation. If the car is otherwise fine and their happy to register just enjoy......

thanks lambs,

Not too concerned at all.

At some stage the car has had a transformation from metallic blue to its current white color, so I figure the chassis number went missing around this time.

At some stage I'll restore the body back to original and this will probably reveal the extent of the body work that has / hasn't been done.

In the meantime, I am just going to enjoy driving it :D

A couple of things it could be.

If the car was originally a Left hand drive car, and converted to RHD, the chassis number would be over on the passenger side (mirror image of where it is on the RHD car). But that doesnt seem likely.

Another Possibility is the original cars chassis was damaged beyond repair, and the car was repaired using a replacement body shell from nissan. I hear that these replacement chassis didnt have numbers. I guess that this would had to have been done close to when the car was new (when shells were still available), and the cost to repair was less than a new car, otherwise it would have just been written off.

Other possibility is that the car was "Rebirthed". Where the car has it's identity switched with a wrecked or rusted out one. Sometimes this is done because the car is stolen. Sometimes because a registered car is rusted or wrecked, and you have a another unlicenced car that you can swap the rego over onto, without going through the "propper" inspection process.

I've had a couple of zeds with 2 chassis numbers. id/compliance says one thing, the stamping says another.
