Huw Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Evening all... just a quick one....my gearbox was rebuilt 3-4 years ago when I restored the car...it has not been driven all that much (despite being a daily driver, i spend 3-4 months a year in Japan). Anyway, the gearbox whines quite loudly in fifth....basically since the rebuild (don't remember exactly)...I always presumed it was the overdrive gear but I thought I would ask now. Do others have a similar problem/noise? It is not unbearable, it would just be nicer if quiet. Huw Quote
stevo_gj Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 I have the exact same problem in my current 260 box that I bought as a 'rebuilt' unit. A specialist looked at it beforehand and told me yes it has been rebuilt but not very well and it will whine a lot. I couldn't afford to get any more work done at the time so we put it in and sure enough it whined in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th. Not 4th for some reason. Now it's not an unbearable whine but it isn't good enough for my dream car, as such I'm replacing it this Monday with a box that has S13 internals. Quote
Huw Posted April 23, 2010 Author Posted April 23, 2010 I reallly don;t want to hear that! Mine was done by a retired gearbox rebuilder who is meant to be good for zed boxes...it a 260 box (i think).... Quote
stevo_gj Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Well I guess it's possible that it wasn't the builders fault, but then it must be a problem with the box itself? Quote
dat2kman Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Try this, dump the gear oil, put in a mix of 1/3rd ATF auto trans fluid, with2/3rds 80/90 weight gear oil, run it for a couple of months, then dump it, then run straight gear oil. I like for road use Penrite 85/90, for race use, Redline light shockproof. The ATF/90 wiegt mix will deglaze the rings, and help shifting, and help bearings bed in and cut any glazing/burning. I had a fifth gear that screamed/howled, did this, and it bedded in, all good now. FWIW Quote
stevo_gj Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 That's very helpful! I'll get the new owner of my box to give this a go. Quote
