Aaron Neubauer Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 Hi all. I'm at a stage where I need to consider sumps. The L28 sump and pick up I have is out of a patrol so it's a mid sump. I'm 99% sure it will work in a 240z, if it won't work for some reason please tell me now. I have looked at the Arizona Zcar sump as well as enlarging the capacity and putting baffles in the existing sump. The Arizona sump looks good but seems a little to expensive for my application. For those who hit the track or race their zed, do you have a modified sump? Quote
PZG302 Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 I don't, I just run the standard sump and that's it, no oil cooler, no funny baffles or anything else. I just make sure that the oil is a little overfull and that I change it every event. Quote
herrods Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 i believe over filling the oil slightly gives you more 710 fluid slopping around int eh sump, so in extreme cornering the pickup wont go dry, and therefore you are less likely to suffer from oil starvation, which leads to well... pop and so on. I am running an L28 in 260z, have done some track time, including some experimental dorifto driving on track, whcih will certainly dry out a pickup, and I have never had an issue either. touch wood Quote
PZG302 Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 why overfill the oil As herrods said, for that little bit of insurance on the track, as mine is a track only car. I have run probably about 100-200ml extra oil in all my track cars and have never had a problem with oil starvation. The track cars I have done this for include: Turner Clubman with Toyota 3K motor Stanza SSS 180B SSS 260Z, and 240Z track car Quote
Aaron Neubauer Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 Thanks for you replies . I think I might run the standard sump as my car will be a daul purpose vehicle. I have been looking at a crank scraper though to reduce windage. http://www.crank-scrapers.com/Datsun-Nissan.html I am running an L28 in 260z, have done some track time, including some experimental dorifto driving on track, whcih will certainly dry out a pickup, and I have never had an issue either. touch wood Herrods, what colour is your car and where did you go to have a drift? C.A.R. Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 L series have windage? Ha, that's a good one... Quote
herrods Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 @ eastern creek you are not supposed to, but @ the beginning of the day while tyres are cold, you gotta warm em up somehow, and at the end of the day, when you are starting to get thru the tyres, they get a little floppy brake far too late into the corner, with a bit of steering on, and control with light throttle, great fun spun it once when i left teh braking so so late i locked the front and then it whipped about if ur in Sydney, look up friday night drifting @ eastern creek, they are about to start an "off street" meet in the carpark of WSID (all legit and above board) they are marketing it a bit like the movie scene, show and shine, and driftwars. more likely be mechanical zip tie yard and destructo derby if you have to go out with another car. Aaron Neubauer Posted April 22, 2010 Author Posted April 22, 2010 L series have windage? Ha, that's a good one... Well not of the flatulent kind, haha, the atomised oil kind! Herrods, my group of mates have two track prepared S13 we take to Queensland raceway drift nights, we always have a blast. They market similar things up in QLD, very fast and furious like with language I can't quite understand haha. One night there was a white 260Z at the drift practice, I thought it may have been coincidence. Funny enough, it put plenty to shame. Quote
C.A.R. Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Hrmm... That was an obtuse comment, I guess. I was referring to the fact the L series engines don't suffer from a lot of windage. Primeraly because of the large cavaty where the t/chain runs, allows them to 'breath' quite well, while also allowing excellent oil drainback from the top of the head. Which is also why you don't need a baffled sump for a fast road/track car. Nissan RB series engines however, are a whole other kettle of fish... Quote
Aaron Neubauer Posted April 22, 2010 Author Posted April 22, 2010 Well there you go! Thanks Lurch! What oil do people use? I was going to run redline 10W-30... Quote
PZG302 Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Well there you go! Thanks Lurch! What oil do people use? I was going to run redline 10W-30... I run a good quality MINERAL oil with a high zinc content. At the moment I will look at availability of the Penzoil GT 50w oil as it will be suitable for my Charger, MX5 and Z, so makes it cheaper to purchase it by the 20 or 50l drum. The other option I have been looking at for the Z is the Penrite mineral oil. I have found that the L sereis motor likes a reasonably heavy oil, that is something like a 10-50, or for a race motor only a straight 50. They also seem to prefer mineral oils over synthetics, plus a good mineral oil is still cheaper than a good synthetic. I also baulk at paying the stupid dollars asked for the fancypants oils like redline, they maybe very good oils but for mine a waste of money when I'm throwing it away after each event in the Z or changing it every three months or 5000 miles in the Charger, or in a high milage, 210,000km, MX5 where the heavier oil is needed. That's my thoughts on oil and I'm sure you'll get plenty of other advice as well from others. Quote
