Not sure if this should go in engine or fuel systems but here goes.

Looking at my engine its pretty clear it doesn't look nice. Its the stock engine to give you an idea of what it looks like.

Now looking at a lot of peoples engines they just look a lot simpler and cleaner which is what im trying to achieve.

Now im just looking for a direction as to things to remove/add to clean it up? There seems to be a heap of stuff between the carbs and the rocker cover which your "clean" engines don't have. Is this the emission control system? On hybridz it says stuff about  removing the emissions control system but I think that would require 240z carbs yes?

If im way off on this please say and ill give up and try croquet or something.

Thanks in advance

There are many different levels of cleaning up the engine bay. My advice would be to head over to Hybridz.org and find the thread something like "post pics of your engine bay", maybe it's because it is late but I can't find the link atm and it's giving me the sh!ts haha. Anyway look through every page of that and work out how far you want to get and get ideas form what other people have done.

You will be able to get a cleaner look with the 240z round tops and they are also easier to setup/tune if you believe what you read on the forums (I believe tonyd in America has mentioned that the flat tops had a few problems from the factory but with those corrected, can actually be a better carb, but this is just all going from my memory).

In my opinion, it would be too hard to get a nice clean engine bay without having the engine out and cleaning/repainting everything. If you want to go a step further you can weld up any unused holes in the engine bay and possibly hide the wiring by running it under the guards through the wheel arches.

To further ad to the look, I like when the spark leads are laid around the front of the engine rather than over the valve cover (personal preference) and polish your bowls on your carby's, your valve cover and you can even put a chrome cover on your oil filter.

If you have electronic ignition you can lose the ballast resistor under the ignition coil and you can buy a polished coil which looks a bit ncier too. An internally regulated alternator will get another box out of the engine bay. Fusible links usually have missing or cracked plastic covers, you can 'upgrade' the whole assembly to a modern fuse block which might look a bit neater.

If there is anything you want to hide, consider some stainless steel or chrome panels to cover up some sections (check out Simon DeGroots yellow 240z for a prime example of some engine bay bling and covering panels)

Crazy show level you might look at things like relocating parts such as the brake cylinders etc to the interior of the car but this is all a bit overkill IMHO.

Here's a pic of my engine bay. Since this photo I have added a polished ignition coil and deleted the ballast resistor. In the future I will get a nicer looking battery and wrap it in stainless steel or chrome or something, replace the frayed break booster line, delete the inspection light and when I do my new engine I will hide the wires and weld up unused holes etc.

Alright so having a look around I noticed there's a lot of engines that don't have E.G.R control valve, Servo diaphragm, anti-backfire thing and similar stuff. Can these be removed from my engine ('77 l26) without becoming illegal? I heard that because of emissions control enforced at the time it was illegal to take these out unless you had older carb's. Is that true or have I been miss informed?

I believe that if your car came with emissions gear on it, then it legally has to have emissions stuff on it. I think the rules apply to cars after 1975(?) from memory, but someone else will confirm that.

From what I understand, you can't legally change to the earlier carbs because the car is still post 75 and therefore, is required by law to be equipt with emissions gear. But that still hasn't stopped people from doing the swap after they get it back on the road... ;)

Cheers mate.

correcto, July 76. (edited to correct the date, its july 76, not feb 75 as stated earlier)

To check, look on your car's ADR plate.

If it has ADR 27a then you need to retain ALL of the emissions equipment.

However, if it all still functions correctly, you can move it to more discrete locations.

The guy whose job it is to roadworthy the car and some of those anti-hoon cops haha.

All depends on where you take it though. My 74 got a roadworthy with just a filter on the breather on the block but then 6 months later I went to McDonald's to get a chocolate sunday and didn't realise it was bogan night and the cops out the front did a full inspection of the car and told me it was illegal :S

It would definitely be easier to get away with once the car has been roadworthied though.

I have had the same thing.

had my car put through a blueslip for falling out of rego for too long.

passed without a care in teh world, nothign dodgy etc etc all above board.

After finishing up @ the RTA i went home and out we went for a drive.  stetch the old girls legs.  got pinged 30 mins later for rims non standard, air intake non standard, suspension non standard, (and the list goes on)

15 mins of "discussion" with the policeman, and there was a shiny new yellow decal on my windscreen (defective sticker for NSW dunno if its the same in all states)

took it straight back to the inspector, and he blinked twice, swore under his breath about police officers and improper training/knowledge etc etc, and cleared the slip.

been defected in my father's XR8 (standard) for ride height too low.  asked the police officer to park his car on the same section of road and pass the block under.  (ford XR8 for him too)

and his car failed too.  Instead of admit his fault, he defected me, and then defected his patrol car to have it inspected.

LMFAO Thats one of the best lines I have read on this read for a long time.

For every ones info, if you want to take the chance like Herrods did, try this one next time.

VIC Police cars move about between precincts so much that the rego stickers almost never get put on the cars each year, in other words the next time you get pulled over, just take a look at the units reg sticker, 99% chance it wont be current, then point it out to the MEMBER, you may get off the infringement.

And this is often exactly my point ......
