240z and 260z's on the market all of a sudden?

So this is just a general observation, but it seems as of late there has been a flood of 240z / 260z cars on the market.

 

I recall in 1998 when I was looking for a 240z, I would check the local paper and never see a 240z for sale. Now it seems many are coming out of the woodwork.

 

I'm wondering where they have all been hiding all these years. Are people cashing in on their recent increase in value?

 

I used to think these cars were rare, now I'm not so sure.

 

Is there anything else funny going on in the Australian market right now around classic and vintage cars?

I was looking for around 5 years before i found an mediocre example of a 240z in the year 2000

It took me that long before i found one to even look at . The same week i came across my 240z i also looked at a fairlady roadster but i opted for the 240z.

If i was looking now I have a smörgåsbord to choose from

I remember religiously checking tradingpost and the paper twice a week for ages, got the irits looking for a 240 and got a 280 instead. So much easier now with everything on the interwebs

I think part of the reason it's easier to find these cars now is definitely the interwebs, (I used to only check the tradingpost in Victoria). Now you can see cars for sale all over Australia, not to mention NZ also (trademe) .

 

However even so, lately so many nice examples have popped up, cars that were never for sale before. Or at least changed hands without me knowing about it. Perhaps these cars used to stay in car clubs? Or maybe in the last 10 years many more have been restored and now owners have had their fun and need a new toy?

 

I don't know what it is, but it seems like what was once a rare find is now relatively easy to obtain, for the right money of course!

I'm not sure that its Z's coming out of the woodwork.  When people are openly listing their Z for 50~85k (check carsales.com) I'd certainly consider selling mine too.  I'm on the hunt for a roadster while they're still relatively cheap.

I can't say for others , but I sold my project 260Z for a sound reason.

 

I don't think all the Zeds on the market atm are being sold just because the prices have gone up.

It's not 'Black & Whilte' reasons that make people sell up - more shades of Gray. Everyone has their own & I'm sure most are all perfectly reasonable.

I also agree that we are hearing about them more due to the prolification of the Intraweb.

I'm inclined to think the cost of restoring / maintaining these cars has become almost prohibitive for the average person...especially if unskilled and need to pay someone to do the doing...

 

We all know if we buy a shi!!er for say $5k then spend at least another $15 to $20k depending on rust and other variables, parts if you can find them or ex USA at a premium depending on the exchange rate at the time makes them an expensive ongoing liability ( depending on your point of view ) especially when you get married have kids, mortgage to pay etc....sadly commodores, falcons and the like are an attractive, usually trouble free 4 plus seat option for around the same cost

 

Unfortunately Insurance company's by and large tending  to write them off after a crash quicker than sneeze makes them even less attractive to hang onto

 

Imho
