Hey Guys

I have a 280z that is badged a fairlady, so guessing it is a jap import one as opposed to an american built cousin.

However on searching around a few car yards and some online investigation it seems that not two many come out with the option of factory cruise control ( like mine has and still works! )

Can anybody with a bit of history shed some light onto this for me ?

No Oz cars 240/260Z came with cruise control, we didn't receive the 280Z only the 280ZX I think I am right in saying the odd 280ZX car had cruise control, so rare. Lynton 8)

just curious from America.  How did you guys miss getting the 280z.  No imports between 75 and 78?  the 280zx came to the american continent in 79.  Most of them had cruise control.  We yanks like our gadgets you know.

Down here, we always get the shyte end of the stick with cars. We had the 260Z from 74-78ish then straight to the 280ZX. I think the US only got the 260Z for 74 - 75 then the 280Z.

Guys, he has a Fairlady 280Z, not a 240/260/280Z, and not a 280ZX.

They definitely had cruise control as a factory option.

Rogerz, Our 260z wasn't crippled by anti-pollution gear and big heavy ugly bumpers like you guys got. So the L26 was plenty powerful enough for Nissan to retain the 260Z model up to 78. The L26 was more powerful than the L24 it replaced.

The only reason you guys got the L28 with efi was stricter emissions laws and those massive park bench and shocks bumpers.

Just a slight correction/addition.

We did get the emission control's on the 78 model. Mine was bogged down with airpump, air injection and of course those wonderful SU's that Niassan had left over.

I'm of the opinion that the last model year of the 260Z in OZ was made up of any gear that couldn't be used in a 280ZX, needless to say that included all the accessories that came on the 260 block.

Thankfully, they must have used all the bumpers, otherwise I guess they would have been value added to our domestic import. :)

Roderz, welcome to Melbourne, unfortunate with the weather the past few days, hopefully it will clear up by the GP...

When I purchased my 260z 10 years ago it had cruise on it, must have been the previous owners after market fitment. It had an electromagnetic pick up on the drive shaft that fed back to a samll controller in the cabin down in the center console near the ashtray and controlled the carbs mechanically with some sort of small electric positioner attached to the carb linkage bar. Needless to say it was quickly turfed, bummer I did'nt get any photos at the time.

In the late 70's early 80's there where many after market accesories, Cruise control was one, remote mirrors another, the rear window louvre is probably the best known. HIH...

thanks guys for the info :)

Yeah, it is deffo an original feature of the car, ( took me an embarissing long time to fugure out how it worked so evantually had to look in the instruction manual and i tell you took me a while to chase down a copy of factory copy of this!)

Stil not sure if the fairlady badges are going to survive the re-spray thou. althou all my mates are already calling it the lady car, so might be to late.

Anywaz thanks for the feedback

too bad about not getting the 280.  without all the garbage the usa govt made them put on it the fuel injected 280 was quite a good power plant.  maybe nissan had a bunch of parts hard to believe they would make two engines in the same years.  seems like extra effort on their part keeping track of what went where.

It was more than 2 engines. There was the L20A, which was in production alongside the L24 and L26, then there was the L28, and with each there were various configurations depending on what car they were going into. eg front sump, mid sump, single down draft carb/dual SU type carb/FI  etc etc.
