Motor and gearbox installation.

Hey fellow Z nuts,

 

Ready to chuck the engine and gearbox back in. Will it go back in as one unit or best to do one at a time? Has any one got some advice and tricks I should look out for. Doing it by myself with help from the engine lifter. [And the Wife]

I find it easier as one unit, its easier to put together outside of the car. Much harder doing a gearbox while the motor is in. Just remember to drain the oil out of the gear box as the angle it goes on to get back in will run the oil out.

Dad and I got the engine and gear box in as one unit.

 

We filled the gearbox with oil before putting it into the car as we had a spare yolk that we could put into the gearbox to stop the oil from leaking out.

On my own, I prefer the gearbox in first then engine, but unless you have done it heaps of times, put them in together as one unit. A bit more involved in raising the car up at the front due to the length of the engine/gearbox hitting the ground as you try to slot it in.

There is a fair bit of playing around with the gearbox in first then the engine. You need a clutch alignment tool first then lots of cursing later trying to match them perfectly so the just come together..

                I was just worried about the length and angles. I will get someone to help just in case. Should I put the front wheels on stands to help clearence or just leave at normal height? Have clutch alignment tool and box is on no problems.

It may be that i have done a fair bit of rigging but to me it's very easy to get it in as one unit. Try lifting 100 odd tonne with 2 cranes and putting the load on all sorts of wierd angles

 

Theres a pic from this thread of roughly the angle your going to want. Tricky bit is the getting the sump past the radiator support and cleanly feeding the gearbox past the firewall all at the same time. Just remember to leave your handbrake off if your going solo.

I just spent the last 3 days pulling 2 engines and putting one back in. I tried both methods of pulling the engine and I have to say that it is waaaayyyyyy easier to pull and install them as one item.
