L28 head and cam on a 260z, some questions.

Hi Guys

Well over the weekend my brother picked up an L28 from an MQ patrol, for a mere $50 sum.

Apparantly the head drooped a valve but, once disassembled, the head is FINE, nice and straight and all good.

It's an N42 head so has the 44 and 35mm valves.

As a result, my 260Z will get the N42 head due to requiring minimal work compared with my E88 head.

Has anyone ran a N42 head on any Z car? If so, what results and so forth?

Alos, the cam on it has a number 3 stamped on it?

Any idea as to what the cam profile might be? would it perform better then the stock Z cam, i would assume it is designed for tourqe not power.

Anyone please advise.

Thanks

Cam wont make FA difference - you wont notice any difference.

The head is a straight bolt up, you'll have a lower static CR.

Not with 240z flat top pistons. ;)

I figured i might aswell use the N42 head, that way i don't need larger valve in the E88 i have.

So NEW plan is, L26 block, L24 flat top pistons, 1mm head gasket, n42 head, deshrouded, ported, polished and shaved.

Should get a CR of about 10.2:1 or so.

fcuncking fantastic,

Another question then, from weverywher i have read, the N42 uses shorting valves so you con't run a big lift cam, what is the maximum cam you can get away with on a stcok length valves and performance springs, without having to get new lash pads.

I'm still new to all this, well the L series engine anyhow.

Humm, will teh stock L24 240z flat top pistons with the notches for the valves suit a n42 head.

HUMM thinking ,thiniking

also, can i get a copy of the template.

ta

The template is pretty easy to make, just get your bare block and cover it with a piece of cardboard where the head sits then place the assembled cylinder head on top wetting the valves with a small amount of oil.

Then press the valves down slightly and this will leave a mark on the cardboard where the valves will travel.

So do you know if the 240Z pistons with valve cutouts work and clear the valves or do i need to get a stock flat piston and machine releifs myself?

I noticed you run dished pistons, i wish to run flat tops for about 10.2: 1 compression

Scootag, how did you polish your carbs and manifold in your album, and did you make your own heat sheild or buy it like that?? I am going down this path at the moment.

Cheers

Well the L24 and L26 have the same bore but it might help if you can get somone to answer this question who has fitted a N42 head to an L24 block as i used dished pistons (cause 40 thou over flat tops are so damn hard to find)

It took me around 12 hours to sand the casting marks off and the with a small buff on a drill (from Bunnings) just polish, polish, Polish using some Autosol.

The heat sheild is half of a 50Klm sign that someone left behind while changing a speed zone, so i cut it in half and shortened it and also cut two tabs to bolt to the manifold. Polishes up really easy and is hard to bend. The other half went to New Zealand with my other set of triples as seen in this thread.
