by produced I mean they got a datsun, did the engine conversion, body kit etc and then badged it a Scarab (not that they actually built the whole car in the US)

So it's kind of like an FPV or HSV but the US modifying a Jap car.

Nope not at all. FPV and HSV are branches of their respective parent companies.

This is more like your local performance shop buying a specific car and modifying it to their own specs. Like the Bullet roadster thing some company made based on the Mazda MX-5.

Not all Scarabs had the California Z body kit either. Alot of them were stock looking except for the louvered bonnet.

They also sold kits and emblems so you could do your own conversion and slap Scarab badges on it.

The Scarab is quite a rare thing these days, and somewhat of a collectors item in the US. It was very much a case of 'hot rodding' the 240Z and aligning it to the 'V8 iron' psyche of the time. I'm pretty sure that the oil crisis killed it off.

Having said that, if I wanted a V8 Z (which would complement my collection nicely!), I think that a 'fresh' conversion would be the way to go.

Yeah its more of an American thing, put into very limited production. Lots has been learnt about swapping V8's into Zeds since these were built, its exactly the same concept that Carrol Shelby came up with when he slotted a V8 into an AC roadster.

I'd agree you are much better off building your own V8 or buying George's V8 Z since you can't swap a motor that big anymore into an S30 in some states.

thats strange?? when i click on the link i see a very stock looking 240z with no bodykit

As I said, not all Scarabs had the body kit. Just scarab badges, a louvered bonnet and a chev V8.
