Azon Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 Just saw a RD28 engine on e-bay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NISSAN-DIESEL-RD28-NON-TURBO-MOTOR-WITH-AUTO-BOX_W0QQitemZ4643099355QQcategoryZ43807QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem and was wondering if anything off it can be used on L6s? Does it have the same crank as LD28, or is it a completely different design? Quote
NZeder Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 Don't know too much about them but I know the RB20/25/26/30 all share the same bore spacing and head bots location as the L6 ie L20a/24/26/28. I believe this is by design as the team that created the RB series were the same guys that did the L6 and the theory is that they wanted some link between the two, ie they wanted a link between the new Skyline that was getting the new inline 6 that was to replace the tried and true L Series. RBZ 260 Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 NZeder! Just to clearifiy few things for me if i understood right. u saying that rb series are similar/same to L series ie cylinder spacing and head bolt locations? So if i get a twin cam head of rb20 or rb25 and should fit the l24,l26,l28 block? ie as in head bolt spacings? has anyone done this? as i can get rbde heads cheap i wouldnt mind trying it out. only problem is RB have timing belts while Ls have chains. or this could be changed over as well. hmm i could smell a replica 432 comming along for my 240 if this is true. or u saying L24/26/28 are similar between each other and Rb20/25/26/30 are similar between each other but not to L i know from rb20 and rb30 thats it cant be changed but its not a bolt up job as few things have to be changed and moded. luke_mcmahon85 Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 lots of people have tried putting RB heads on L6's, but none have ever been successful i don't think, not sure if bolts line up, but water passages and the like are just too difficult to get right search over on HybridZ, but i'm pretty sure it can't be done Quote
zr240 Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 There is no real point putting a rb head on an L series block. The rb block is better than the l series etc etc Ash Quote
pauly_adams Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 i was thinking that it may be possible to make up a alloy head using the 2 heads a rb head and a L series. if u took a mold of both heads and cut them in half then joining the the botem of a L head to the top of the rb head and made the room for the extra vales it could work because all the water passage would line up so would the bolts and then it would leave u whith a dohc on top any 1 else thort of somethin like this madness Quote
NZeder Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 I am saying is that a RB and L6 share the same bore spacing and head bolt locations. Water and oil galleries are different. It would be a major job to get a RB head onto a L6, chain vs belt ie oil in the timing cover on one but not the other. So if you go with a belt then you need to seal off the front cover on the L6 = not going to work too well as the oil pump, dizzy drive etc are all in there. Going chain on the RB head = custom chain, tensioner, gears etc = too much $$ to be worth the effort just stick a RB engine and be done with it - cool in theory but in practice just too much $$$ and hassle to be bothered with.
