This ones a "built" 280Z as per USA spec 280Z, that has the different to 240/260 front clip, and with the indicators on the grille instead of the lower metal sections below the bumper.

The bumpers on the USA cars weigh in around 45kgs with all the 5MPH crash stuff and shock absorbers, fortunately CAMS rules for Group S Historic prod Sports say "Bumpers may be removed"

The 280 weighs in at 1070 kgs, it has to run a R200, cos that's what it says in the homologation docs.

Motoer is a L28 injection, with some very carefull work done on head/inlet/throttle body/AFM and airfilter flowbench testing, and it runs the 6 into 1 collectoe extractors.

I'm allowed a max overbore of 1.5mm, and am using CP forged slugs, They are a stock forging for a Honda, but with the last two machining stages at CP cancelled and I then finish the tops off.

Rods are forgies but much longer than the stockos or the early 240's (133mm) and the rod stroke ratio gives me a safeish 7600 rpm limit. Crank is stock stroke, but has been knife-edged, along with the BHJ balancer and the steel flywheel I've managed to shed approx 14 kilograms from the rotating/reciprocating mass.

It is a f54 bum and a p90 top, with a bit of angle milling here and there and a few mm's taken off the head. It has to run avgas, and wont idle below 1000, the injectors are told little lies with the help of some changes to resistor valuesInjectors are made by the same manufacturer as the stock injectors !!

This is the same as changing jets on SU or Weber carbs.

The throttle body, and inlet plenum MUST REMAIN EXTERNALLY STOCK says CAMS rules!

So externally they are, internally thay are not!

Some pics

Eastern Creek with a Alfa GTV where it should be, and,

Yep the DeTomaso's just in front, but going into Hell corner ( Mt Panorama) I got on the inside and made a Zed car 15 foot wide going up Mountain straight, suffice to say when we crossed the line I was over 200 meteres further in front.

The box is a close ratio internals with a .83 fifth to give the motor a rest down the long straights at Eastern Creek/Phillip Island/Bathurst, externally it is the usula Lseries type box but with a very heavy spring externall detent to prevent me accidently slipping into  reverse on the downchange from fifth to fourth, which does happen when you are getting bounced around amongst traffic and the bumps that tracks seem to develop. Consequently the reverse idler is half worn away and I have to hold the stick when reversing cos it jumps out!

The engine and box mounts are "captive type, ie no wobbly rubber here, but very stiff with a bit of bracing.

The diff is either a 4.111 or a 4.375 R200 full plate LSD depending on tracks.

The rims are stock, yes stock 6x14 280 zx and I must use a control tyre for Group S, some of the pics show a wider rim/tyre, these are used when I am not in "Hysteric CAMS Rules Mode !!)

Tyres for Historics are either a 185/60x14 or a 195/60x 14.

yes I have a lot of fun at 1070 kgs and approx 260horse at the fly

Couple of mates from up Qld way, The green one is Jon Siddens, Targa Tasmania Datsun runner.

On the odd occaision I have just managed to be a bit quicker than Jon at one of our local Qld tracks,

and,

the other is John McKeons lightweight red and yellow 240, which I have driven for JohnMc at a couple of events.

Both these pics were from "Speed on Tweed, a couple of years ago. I ran my Datsun Sports 2000 there, and on the Saturday, (two day street sprint type event) I was second outright, but by the end of event the open wheelers and the special type cars got a bit quicker, I was relegated to eight outright !!!

Yep, Running the red Datsun Sports 2000, looks like I'm in for a bit of competition for fastest historic logbooked car.

Last year I managed to get the win, and the mob that organised the event last year, was supposed to award me the overall event outright win, cos they were trying to attract the "historic" mob back.

See how we go.

Stick your head in under my carport and say G'day!

Great read... just curious, what time were you getting around Sandown and PI? I remember Peter Halls effort around the Island which was damn quick!

Posted

At Sandown I think in the 1.28's? and at PI 1.58's, and Hall's thing was running stock?

1 3/4 " Hitachi SU's, I think he was asked to put them back on, and at one stage I managed to stay in front of Peter for around 7 laps, just behind the Porkers of Geoff Morgan and Stan Adler, (3rd place - Oh what joy!!)

Then,,,,,, I looped it going up to Lukey, Peter got me, but I recovered to finish fourth. It was a 11 lapper earlier this year 2009

Pete was pretty surprised I got him, and said I was a bit cheeky running with my lights on high beam too!!! He's one cool fella. Drives real nice too.

this is my old Sc 240z now run by John Ingham, I bought it from Bruce Richardson in Sydney back in early '97 and ran in quite a few events in Sydney in the early 2000's and a couple of local historic Wintons. It was good for 2.02s around P.I and a 1.31 at Sandown before the engine/gearbox and brake refresh....so should be good for a sub 2.0 now

I refreshed the tired engine, brakes and suspension in 2006 , squeezed 235 bhp out of the L24 on triple Mikuni's but had to revert to SU's for Hysterics which killed it so I then lost the plot and sold it (stupid I know) but the body was very tired and it needed lost of rust removed. Mechanically it was bullet proof when I sold to John Ingham, he got out of a Sb 911T (doing 2.08s at P.I) into my Zed and did a 2.01 in his first Hysteric event ...........he was stoked !!!

We met in QLD at the Nationals over Easter, I was there in my road Zed, my Roadster stayed at home

cheers

Alan

Excellent thread - good to see so many zed racing in Oz :)

Question what size rubber/rims does the "John McKeons lightweight red and yellow 240" car run they look like performance challenger rims - with a staggered offset ie 15x8 fronts and 15x10 rears?

Hi Alan yep I remenber catching up with you at NDN09, good to hear from you again.

I'm running the Z at Sandown 09, and am thinking about?? bringing the Dato Sports 2000 (it now has aGroup T  Logbook- Prod Sports with a genuine racin history) d to Phillip Island for the 2010 Historics, I will have to get the event directors OK to be allowed to run it with the Group S cars, otherwise it'll be the blue Z in 2010

Hi Mike (NZeder) John McKeons thing runs anyting from 15x8/10s with wets or street type semi slicks, up to 18x8/10's with radial race slicks, depends on what he is doing with it.

We keep talking about getting him to come down to PI or Eastern Ck to do either Island Magic, or a six hour race or one of the six hour regularity things.

There is approx 15 or soreasonably good quality Zed cars running over the ditch here, and only a couple of Datsun Sports 2000's in various race meets.

Up here in Queensland there is a pretty healthy contingent of Zeder's that do the street sprints/supersprints, around 15, most are road registered cars.

It's good to see Nissan/Datsuns are very strong in NZ

I know John McKeon's car quite well as I used to race against it in Sydney when it was originally built.

Stewart Wilkins built the engine and it had about 100hp more than mine, very quick on power circuits like E. Creek but I was able to give Lex, the original owner, a bit of stick around the tighter circuits as my car was the better handling and stopper of the two. The original owner had a lot of reliability problems with it and quite regularly broke things like gearboxes, but when it worked it was quick.

Since John has owned it I see he has sorted the car properly and it now goes like stink.

Now I have my toy back at home and hopefully ready for the dyno in the next week or so I am looking forward to running again.
