What rust converter and primer to use?

Well I have started stripping my car and am now wondering what rust removers/converters and primers has everyone used? Also what body filler did everyone use (I am welding all rust but am planning to fill minor imperfections for financial reasons)? I am interested in brand names you SUCCESFULLY used and where to get them from. Also how did you apply the primer - did you use a spray gun (asking as someone suggested that I should maybe use a brush for unerside of the car)?

Well as far as mine went....

we initially cleaned up and used phosphoric acid on the rust...but after seeing how long+slightly ineffectual that way was....

simply blasted the entire car (on rotisserie) with rust prone box sections left open (dog leg in sill, part of front guard etc, so blaster could get in.....

Once that was all done, covered all non-visible sections like the inside of doors, hatches, any of the open box sections, roof etc in 'killrust' (a black wattyl paint).... (Brushed that mainly)

 

**N/B it might also be a good idea to get all removable panels galvanised (esp if u want to keep the car!)

 

In terms of primer, I really don't remember...

but on the underside you can buy a spray on tar like substance (think it's made by K&H but it will need a special gun. which is what we used and it worked really well....

 

then again....I'll only know how well it went in a couple of years!!

btw way, the 'killrust' is fairly expensive at around $75 for a large paint tin's worth (sure there are other products without brand name)..

also, when buying filler, price is very important, what is at super cheap is supercheap... k&H is a expensive but a fantastic product that reputable auto shops have, also as some other brands but i forget the names

hi I used bit of a mix on mine.

 

paint stripper and sand blaster to get rid of the paint and rust.

 

mine wasnt as bad so most of it was just pin holes which i welded all up and if larger section i replaced it with new sheet of metal.

 

protected it from the inside with fish oil (spray can stuff)

 

on the outside i used etch primer (either spies hecker or protec both are good and not to harsh on the pockets) but helps to know the guys as well to get trade prices. since my previous experiences in crash industry i got contacts pretty much accross adelaide.

 

than after that i used fine body filler protec brand work realy well for small imperfections. though i didnt use much of the normal filler as i got the panels in relatively straight so the fine was doing realy good i used bit of the normal one as the previous owner deleted the rear bar and had 10kg of body filler on it so i got rid of it and returned it back to normal. had few spots that werent as easily accessable from the inside to push out perfectly but only small amounts. also bit around the sunroof area.

 

as for chemicals i wouldnt use the if it has surface rust sand blast or sandi it down with fine sanpaper ie 180 and above than use steel wool to kinda polish the panel. one one spot i used the redexx rust converter and kinda reacted with the primers. so not a good idea unless u doing under neath the car and going to put the body shuts underneath. seem to be ok with that.

 

last i used 2pk primer filler to get the scratches and pin holes out.

 

 

all my gear came from mob called crash supplies in adelaide not sure if they have those guys in other states but im sure theres similar places the brand the sell mostly is dupont paint and spies hecker. lot of crash supplies use these products.

Not up to the Primer stage yet but have used POR15 products so far, where I have repaired rust or had new panels ie floor pan and chassis rail welded in.

 

I have also used the K&H bituminous coating on the underside and inside the guards. I brushed it on.

 

I have removed some paint with brush on paint stipper and wire wheel but for the rest of the car I was planning to get it bead or media blasted. Then remove the glass and use paint stripper and wire wheel to clean up the channels.

 

Has anyone had any experience with this ? Is this a good way to go ?
