S30Mike Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Hey guys, Ive got loads of movement happening on my front wheels. What i mean by this is that the locked on good by the wheel nuts, however if you grab the groves of the tread and shake the wheel, there is quite alot of movement happening. Whilst im driving the steering wheel vibrates around alot as well. I have just had a wheel alignent and it was running well, so im think it could be the wheel bearings? Can anyone shed some light for me? Thanks Quote
xa1973 Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Sounds like wheel bearings...........or your tie rod ends may have seen better days as well Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 25, 2009 Moderators Posted July 25, 2009 Yep, wheel bearings must have too much play. There should be a little, but not excessive.. Time to get your hands dirty with some grease! While you have it all apart, re-grease your wheel bearings.. Quote

Mr240z Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Just replace them.....Front wheel bearing's are cheap compared to the rear... Quote
S30Mike Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Well, looks like new front wheel bearings, i tested the rear, seems very solid. Quote
pauly_adams Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 well thanks for the post mine does the same thing and was going to get a wheel inlinment to try and fix it, mine also does the same thing looks like i need to put my new bearings in also. cheers Pauly Quote
nizm0zed Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 just to clarify in the thread, for anyone who doesn't know, by checking for movement of the wheel across the horizontal plane (hands on 9 and 3 o'clock) you will primarily be diagnosing any play in the steering system, eg, tie rod ends, rack ends, steering rack ect. doing the same check on the vertical plane (hands at 12 and 6 o'clock) of the wheel checks for wheel bearing play only. allways check your wheel bearing play first, then your steering play. If you have some movement in your bearings, it'll show in the steering test too. often you just need to nip up the bearing preload a bit to eliminate it, but bearings are cheap, and reasonably easy to change. Just remember you need to change the bearing race too, they are matched to the new bearings. its imperative that the new bearings are packed properly with grease too, otherwise they will fail quickly. Thomo260 Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I would be having a go at the person that done the wheel alignment too. I always checked the front end inc. wheel bearing before doing an alignment on any vehicle. Quote
