BenZed Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 updates? Waiting on a couple of things to get painted so I can put it back together properly. The carbon bumpers, trims and bonnet are waiting for the tail light panel, rear spoiler and front apron to get painted body colour. Quote
scott Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 cant wait to see what it looks like, you also have any parts you dont want anymore? Quote
BenZed Posted March 17, 2011 Author Posted March 17, 2011 Yep, four steel bumpers, front grille, two tail light panels (one with Skyline badge), couple of engines... Quote
Mr Camouflage Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Yep, four steel bumpers, front grille, two tail light panels (one with Skyline badge), couple of engines... Could I persuade you to remove the skyline badge and sell it to me Quote
Mr Camouflage Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Really? I though the panel was the same and AU cars got a Datsun badge, and JDM cars got a Skyline badge. Quote
BenZed Posted April 3, 2011 Author Posted April 3, 2011 They are similar but not identical, the Japanese panel has a long cut-out for the badge instead of an indentation. GT-R models may be a different matter. Quote
BenZed Posted April 7, 2011 Author Posted April 7, 2011 UPDATE! Yes, finally did something today. My painter finally gave me back the tail light panel and front apron, so I bolted them up and fitted all the carbon bits I brought in from Restored. They had trouble painting the rear spoiler for some reason so I'll fit that tomorrow. The Carbon bonnet is just sitting unbolted at the moment, so it doesn't line up perfectly but still looks pretty good. The carbon bumper mounted up to the original brackets and fits perfectly. The little carbon trim pieces were fine too once I enlarged the holes on the guards to help locate them properly. The long trim piece on the leading edge of the bonnet is simply held in place with double sided tape. It is so light I doubt it will need anything else. On the back had the tail-light panel smoothed over - don't plan on having any badges. With the dark bumper and trims I thought it would look better to paint the panel in body colour for contrast. A dark grey panel would make it all look a bit bland. The bootlid is sitting a bit to one side as I haven't fitted the latch again yet. Overall I think the effect is quite good, just waiting for the spoiler! Experts will note I blacked out the brake-light surrounds, making it look a bit more like a GT-R and more importantly makint the lights look simpler. Now the body is nearly finished I can get to work on the driveline and interior. I picked up a stock RB30E (R31 engine) recently for a case of beer, complete with RB20 5-speed. My plan is to register the car with this stock engine, then later fit an RB26 head with trumpets on the six throttles... but that's a way off yet. Quote
Riceburner Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Wow, it looks dead straight and those carbon bits nice. Tail light panel really works well. Quote

GT-R models may be a different matter. Ah, I get what your saying, but thats not the skyline badge I thought it was. There is another (like the GT-R had) that is the same as the Datsun type badge that fits in the indent. Like so: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4055/4674597565_1c22ee0ff6.jpg Are you going to put a set of GT tail lights on it? Quote

For some reason that particular badge is very hard to find, don't know why there aren't repros of it readily available. If I find a set of GT lights I will put them in, but not too fussed about that right now. Quote

benny Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 dont think they will fill your flares on the front mick!! Quote
zzzzed Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 crap.. sorry ben i might have to leave them now :-[ Quote
BenZed Posted April 20, 2011 Author Posted April 20, 2011 think i better ask first.. Is the front off set on these rims ok for a 240z? Watanabe normally recommend a 16x8.5 -6 for the front with ZG flares, but some people prefer the 16x9 -13, which effectively sits the outer edge of the wheel 12mm further out. I think you could safely fit the 17x8.5 +4 Rotas with a 20mm spacer, as this still puts the outside edge 2mm further in than a pair of 16x9 -13s. I will include a pair of 20mm spacers if anyone wants to do this. Quote
BenZed Posted May 27, 2011 Author Posted May 27, 2011 Ok back to the car. Some good progress now, I have got the RB30E engine and gearbox sitting in the car, pretty much a perfect fit. Only needs plates welded onto the original mounts for the engine, not sure about the gearbox mount yet. 240K tailshaft will be fine without mods. Gearlever also in the right place. Quote
