acf321 Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 I guess its been done here before, but my 240 has a L26 eng and tran, and hence the gear change selector is further forward than standard. Prior owner has not properly addressed this, so you tend to dust your knuckles on the heater controls in 1st,3rd and 5th. .. Aside from bending the lever, is this problem easily recified? Is it because the 260 bell housing is shorter? Has anyone else had this issue, and how did they address it? Rgds Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 13, 2009 Moderators Posted July 13, 2009 If you want to rectify it, only way is to find a original 240 trans and install...only other easier way (and what I have done) is use an oxy torch and bend your shifter to suit. Reason is the 240 trans is longer in the rear section where the shifter is. Quote
acf321 Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 have heard the 260 box is a better item right? is this your experience Zedman? Quote
NZeder Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 odd what year is your 240z again. The 240z and 260z B boxes are the same casing etc ie depends on the market they were for the gearset might be the same ie the same box. It is the A box that is different. So it depends on the body shell you have and the centre console setup with will help ID what box was originally in there. The stock leave in a 260z does bend backwards is your straight? Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 13, 2009 Moderators Posted July 13, 2009 have heard the 260 box is a better item right? is this your experience Zedman? Yes, I think stronger and better ratio's. Just bend the shifter and all should be fine. I can take a pic of mine while it's out to show you if you want... Quote
acf321 Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 Mike ... mine's a 71 HS30 00683. Thanks NZeder, a photo would be excellent, as I think the issue for my car will be that the factory ashtray (in front of the level) will be difficult to install, given the shift lever is so far forward ... Just wondering if U bend it back 15 degrees or so will it fit? I went to considerable expense to buy the ashtray from e-bay and now i'm just wondering if it will actually fit, so that photo would be great (pls post with one in neutral and one in say 3rd to illustrate the angle. Cheers Adam. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 13, 2009 Moderators Posted July 13, 2009 Took a pic of my shifter while its out of the car and gearbox, sorry I cant take a pic of it while it's in the car....gearbox isn't in yet! Hope it helps.. Quote
NZeder Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 That explains it then - yours is a early/cross over shell and it would have originally had an A box fitted so yes just bend the leaver more to fix the issue. And also you console should have the second slot for the crude cruse control ie hand throttle and the cig lighter will be on the console not the dash. Quote
acf321 Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 Thanks Zedman ... my shifter is nothing like that ... I will have Nat take a look at it. Thats right Mike, i have the two controls on the console and the cig lighter is also at the front of the console just ahead of the shifter (in the removable ashtray). thanks guys ... will add this to the 'to do' list. Also Mike, i like the idea of spraying the stone guard paint Inside the car, hence the need not to sound deaden (ie add weight) unnecessarily. Car is looking excellent. Quote
