sexual_sushi Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Hi all, thought I would finally start a build thread. This thread will be for my first Z car, a 77 260z 2+2. I purchased the car around the end of 2002 for $1500. The car was 99% complete and came with a 60% complete parts car. The car was driveable at the time, I drove it for about 4klms and then parked it and it hasn't been driven since. As you can see in the picture the car was painted flat black. It looks like it was done with just pressure packs and the black was all over the chrome work. Luckily this pretty much wiped off. Originally this car was meant to be a quick refresh with a quick coat of paint and a little bit of engine work to make a tidy daily driver. We missed our 3 month deadline and I ended up heading back to uni which meant the car didn't progress very much. In the meantime, I had a look around the Show & Shine at the 2003 Z Car Nationals. My quick resto quickly turned into a $30000 show car. Every job we did we started saying 'well if we are going to do this, we might as well do this', and the project started to blow out of proportion a fair bit. As a result, 6.5 years later the car is still sitting in the shed in primer. I was later looking at borrowing the money to finish the car when Nigels Yellow 240z came up for sale. It was everything I was planning on doing to my z but it was a 2 seater and more importantly I could drive it now. So the project car got put on hold again however in my mind it was definitely worth it. I was always a bit disappointed that this flashy car I was building was the 2+2 version. Now I will have the best of both worlds, a pretty 2 seater for cruising and what will be a damn nice 2+2 for daily driving and ferrying drunks home I can't remember the number exactly but we are up to 140+ patches of rust cut out and replaced. There are 2 patches to go and then we will put the car on the rotisserie to clean up underneath. Everything has been stripped from the car, all thats left is the brake lines which will be coming out eventually as well. From here it's down to the panel beaters to put a new roof on (minus the sunroof). I'll post some pics of the body work at a later date. The car has changed colours many times. Originally it was to be red but this soon changed to yellow. After buying Nigels car this has now changed to orange. Below are photoshops of my styling plans for the car atm. I'm undecided on the white or black version... I think the white looks more fresh but the black looks mean (in a good way) I've really been getting back into the design of the car so hopefully I can figure out my finances and get this car finished. I'll post some more pics of parts etc in the coming weeks. Quote
sexual_sushi Posted May 21, 2009 Author Posted May 21, 2009 Suspension We purchased the suspension parts locally and ended up with King Springs and KYB Shocks with all new suspension rubbers. Quote
sexual_sushi Posted May 21, 2009 Author Posted May 21, 2009 Dash Had the dash recovered at dashboard restorations in Brisbane. Was $600 at the time Quote
. Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Go the white stripe. should look nice mate. I know the hassles of having a second project taking a back seat.......or hold on both our second projects are adding a back seat. he he Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 i got to agree that white looks fresh but the black just looks so much more menacing. id go for black. Quote
garvice Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 One major problem I see with your photoshops Shaun. THEY ARE OF A 2 SEATER! How are you going to see what it really looks like? But to be honest, Brian (1fastz) on hybridz has a orange 2+2 with ZG flares and it looks incredible. It is the one with his twincam head in it. Quote
Scando Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 What about the wheels black with the stripes white? Either way, I reckon definately black for the wheels. Quote
eddii Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 This should look really good once done......hopefully i'll finish my car before u finish yours LOL! Quote
waxhead Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I will be interested to follow this build thread What engine are you going to go with Quote
garvice Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 One major problem I see with your photoshops Shaun. THEY ARE OF A 2 SEATER! How are you going to see what it really looks like? Actually what I need to do is go on a cruise with you so that you can take some beautiful photos of my 2+2. Purely for the reason so that you have something to test colours on. LOL. Quote
tbscobraZ Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 DEFINATELY the black in my opinion looks tops hope all goes to plan. Quote
sexual_sushi Posted May 25, 2009 Author Posted May 25, 2009 Thanks guys, sorry I was away for the weekend. So after your comments I'm still undecided on the black/white haha. I suppose the point is either way it should still look good. I actually have a folder of 2+2 pics from hybrid z (that thread something about 2+2 owners, I saw you had posted a bit on there garvice). I chose to photoshop my 2 seater cause styling wise it's the closest to what I want to do (wheels, spoiler after some photoshopping and those taillights). The majority of the nice 2+2's have the flares, which I love, but I'm not going with them on this car (I'll save them for my third car ). But yeah, now that your seats are in I'd be happy to take some photos. Maybe after go karts on the weekend? The engine is going to be the l26 from my 240z. It is a really tidy engine but I'm putting a 3.1litre stroker in it and there's no point wasting such a good engine. Quote
sexual_sushi Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 I was designing a modern interior for years but lately I have been think of doing a retro styled interior. I photoshopped a pic of garvices rx7 seat conversion... I'm thinking of getting the "Datsun Compe" steering wheel as well but I'm having a hard time swallowing $600+ on a steering wheel. There is an unopened 10th anniversary reproduction on yahoo atm but I just purchased new door trims for my 240z and don't think I can afford it. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 9, 2009 Administrators Posted June 9, 2009 I like the RX7 seats with the original stitching pattern very tasteful. Would be great to see it actually done. Quote
garvice Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 They look even better in the lambo diamond stiching pattern, post that one mate. As for steering wheel, I have an original steering wheel at my place. I am sure you could get it retrimmed like the Compe wheel for a lot less then $600. Let me know if you want it. Quote
sexual_sushi Posted June 10, 2009 Author Posted June 10, 2009 They look even better in the lambo diamond stiching pattern, post that one mate. ah I was leaving it for you to post So this is what garvice was thinking about for his car... I have a couple of original wheels at home as well. I thought about getting them retrimmed but wasn't sure what kind of result to expect. Has anyone got pics of a retrimmed wheel? Quote
tbscobraZ Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 That looks awesome do it. Also looking forward to seeing the custom front spoiler as I want to get a custom one 2. Good luck. Quote
garvice Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Only thing stopping me is - Time - Money - Qld summers with no aircon Quote
sexual_sushi Posted December 30, 2009 Author Posted December 30, 2009 My dad needed some shed space so he could fix some rust and respray his rover. So he finished off the rotisserie for me so he could move my car around the shed. As you can see in the photos the shed's quite chockas and needs to be cleaned out. My car is being used as a storage shelf atm. The car has been sitting in that primer for the last 2 years so that will need to be sanded again. We have decided that we are both hopeless at bogging so we are going to give it to our spray painter to straighten out the body. We will just line up the panels as best as possible. Quote
waxhead Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I love that interior. Awesome can't wait to get my rx7 seats in. Are you doing the engine your self Quote
garvice Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I love that interior. Awesome can't wait to get my rx7 seats in. Just don't do my Lambo retrim before me. Quote
Devin_M Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I'm new here but I wanted to say I really like the way the car was going. Was kind off taillights did you use in the earlier photoshop picture? Quote
