Mate, I don't know about a new one. But Auto electricians can do wonders with starters and alternators. find one from the wreckers and get them to recondition it. They turn out just like new.

If you can't find another good one or don't care if it's not an original, a starter from a R31 Skyline bolt right in with no issues. Solenoid comes close to the steering shaft but not that close. They are little more efficient being a planetary gear type so they won't drain you battery as much when starting... Something to chew on

If an r31 starter fits then I take it a VL's (RB30) does as well. I thought they looked very similar. I've got three starters from 280ZX's here if you are interested.

Alternate..........

OEM starters draw a lot of current from your battery, more so when they get on in age, even with a new battery youve only fixed half the problem..

I bought a High Torque for my ZX, works very very well, is half the size of OEM and spins like a tornado....

You can either buy them here in Aus or from Ebay USA

( they donot cost what the UK site has them listed for )

Ive put one in both my Fords and Mustang...Au $200.00

Chev's the same $$ value

I paid Au $170.00 for the L series unit....as pictured

Cheers

Mine is a planetary gear starter which isn't old at all but when that wears out, that last one there will be going in for sure! Lighter, quicker and draws less power...what else do you want?

I'd say they cooked it trying to start a car for about an hour without letting the starter cool down. Or severe arcing from the brushes until they welded themselves to the armature then ripped it apart..who knows?

You guys should have seen the starter that Josepf and I took apart, it was so badly corroded it just fell apart in our hands once we took it apart.

Nah, it died on a non stop 7 hour drive... On the last 1 hour stretch i stopped to get petrol and it never started again...
