S30Mike Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Hey guys, Im looking to get my flares fitted yet im having trouble finding someone that will do them! Ive been doing some leg work in my local auto district, (artarmon, Sydney) and i have been turned down by half a dozen body shops now. Can anyone recommend a place that has done it on there Zed, or know anyone that is a panel beater? Quote
Sirpent Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Just a suggestion............ When I had my shop 20 years ago, my apprentice used to tell me about the custom projects they used to undertake at TAFE, a lot of which where private ppl who allowed the 3rd year apprentices, under supervision by the their teachers, do custom work as part of their assesments. The problem with panel shops is that a skilled beater can turn over a one day repair and earn the shop over a grand based on his labour, flares need a lot of attention and the shop managers cant see any value in putting a beater on it, plus the flare kits are usually way out and need a lot of TLC to get right, most of the time they dont meet the customers expectations once on and then the SH*T fight begins, Give a local TAFE college a call and ask to speak to the panel beating department teacher, you will probably find he will be very open minded about it. Cheers John Quote
Toecutter Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Shame your not in Melbourne, I gotta guy that does them for $300 to $350, very neat too with a TIG welder so heat is kept low and paint not affected. Next day pick up too. I was very happy with the job on my car except I shold cut higher. No matter I'll get to it. Sulio Quote

Sirpent, i think that may be the go, now that you mention it i remember the guys at my tafe doing this. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 see if i were you ill find another reason to make a road trip to Melbourne. ie small holiday. drop the car to the bloke Sulio said it takes one day and on the way home u have a new car to show off. think of it as a Z facelift and ur mini holiday. though dealing with tafes (here anyway) u may be without a car for long time. they not quick with their work. Toecutter Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 I'm just picturing a post in one of those other threads on "spot a Z"; "Z seen pile full off crazy looking TAFE apprentices in a paddock" Quote

Moderators Zedman240® Posted May 8, 2009 Moderators Posted May 8, 2009 I think you have to find those older restorers/panel beaters rather than those quick in - quick out taxi repairers. I know of one near my work in Melbourne (which doesn't help you at all). This guy restores and paints classics and nothing newer. Hope you know what I mean... Quote
