Mr240z Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Building a L28 ATM and just looking at lightweight flywheels options Is there anyone out there selling a flywheel or know of a place in Australia that sells them Something like Fidanza etc. Any ideas boys........................ Administrators gav240z Posted February 16, 2009 Administrators Posted February 16, 2009 Hey Pauly, Have you considered machining the original flywheel? It shouldn't cost too much and its what I use in my 240z. To be honest I wouldn't want it much lighter than it is already. Depends on your needs I guess, but I'm using a HD clutch with it and an L28, no problems so far. Quote
Mr240z Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 So I just take the flywheel to place that machine's flywheels and asked them to lighting it. Would they have the spec's or will they just know how much to machine off. And also does it really make a big difference in the performance. Thanks Gavin. Off the subject abit I,ve got a F54 L28 block, What would you recommend I do to the bottom end. I,m using flat top pistons with a E88 worked head with triple 45dcoe Weber's that i allready run. In the piston size should i go std or oversized. Any comments would be nice. Quote

A machine shop should know how much meat to take off it. They basically carve the center of it out. It will make a big difference to how the car revs (faster, but revs drop quicker too), take in your harmonic balancer with it as they will need to match the assembly. Your harmonic balancer might be stuffed (all original zed ones deteriorate over the years). If it is stuffed you can destroy your bottom end bearings in the motor, so its worth fixing the old one or replacing it with an aftermarket one. I noticed my engine was alot snappier when I changed the flywheel, it really revved quickly and the curved electronic distrbutor really made it a beast, can't wait to put a huge cam in it and triple mikuni's. Depends on what you want honestly, the more I think about the L31 build the less I think its actually neccessary for a good L28. That is LD28 crank and overbore. You could take it out to 2.9ltr if you want. For a budget build, I'd consider an L28 crank with L24 rods and shorter pistons (depends on CR ratio though). L24 rods are better as they are longer and the rod / crank ratio is better = better revving engine. I would probably invest my money in port work for the E88 and pay special attention to the valve areas. That's just my opinion though, I'm not an engine building expert. What camshaft have you got in it? Quote
modular9 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 On the l28 : I bored out to 2.9 L + blueprinted and balanced the bottom end with balancer and flywheel. They took some material out of the crank and the flywheel is much lighter etc. Had the L28 rods balanced ( which meant some where shaved some werent ) and matched . Put in dished l28 pistons ( fuel getting crap and I think a turbo might be in the future ) and put it all together over a 2 week period ( I know it is slow for building an engine but i am a measure, mockup, measure, mockup, build type of guy). rest is a n42 with a polish ( didnt close the injector notches ) and rebuilt triple dellortos. Moderators Zedman240® Posted February 17, 2009 Moderators Posted February 17, 2009 One thing I recommend Pauly is if you get the flywheel lightened / balanced is to take the clutch with you to get balanced together as a unit. I was told mine was so far out I was lucky not to install it and use it! I took mine to a local machine shop that does alot of V8 supercar work. They know how to do it properly. Form memory it only cost around $120ish Quote
Mr240z Posted February 18, 2009 Author Posted February 18, 2009 Thanks Guys for all the tips, Alot to think about now.......... Quote
