Steering Wheel Repairs - anyone done it?

Recommended Posts

I did a bit of a search here on the forums to see if anyone had tried to repair the grip on their original Zed's steering wheel.

I may have missed something but I couldn't find anyone who had tried (or bothered)

There are some companies out there that either restore the wheel skins by re-injecting them with polymers or products you can buy yourself, but they seem to have mixed results.

Here's the wheel from my 260z that I was thinking of restoring

If anyone has any info or ideas on this I would greatly appreciate it.

if u want to retain the original most prob try source one in better condition or get it redone in leather. rough cost 80-100. other than that.

if u want to do it your self.

i would repair the steering wheel so it looks like its in good conditions ie body filler.

make a mould. strip the steering wheel. position it correctly and than pour new rubber in the mould. u can get polyrubber kits

but the time and effort to get anywhere near as good as new will far outweigh the trimmer cost in getting it redone in leather or just buying a nardi or similar old school steering wheels.

or get a 240z wooden one.

I'm guessing the wheel I've pictured above isn't worth a lot in good condition anyway.

I know 240z steering wheels are worth a bit in good condition. You might be able to source a new 260z style wheel from Japan for cheaper than repair cost.

Try asking at:

or of course ebay!

These cars are getting pretty old now and a lot of us have after market steering wheels but as time goes on the original boring old 260z steering wheels will be worth a significant dollar when restoration back to originality comes into play they are not as easy to find as you may think as each year goes by another 260Z no doybt will meet the metal crusher!!
