Azon Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Does anyone know of any for 240z? How much and contact details of the companies that do them in Victoria would be appreciated. Quote
lambs Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 I have a Bond roll cage, they're out Bayswater way. Vicroads requirements are here: http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrne/vrne5nav.nsf/FirstChild/-EEC8092FE0E5478FCA256FD300241C39 Remember that for CAMS purposes, steel cages are now mandatory for anything other than club sprints (if that hasn't also changed). The only exception is if the alloy roll cage was log booked prior to the rule change, which was a few years ago now. Of course this only matters if you plan on going racing. Quote
zedrally Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Cages aren't required for Introductary Rallies, Touring Road Events (TRE) which do not have a "closed road section" ot Touring Assemblies. I didn't think cages where road legal, it's a catch 22, because once your caged then you also need seat and belts. All of these have a time limit and need replacing once the expiry dates arrives. Any aftermarket seat that is put in the car must be ADR compliant and the same goes for seat belts, plus you can't use the standard seat belt mount points to attach the cage. I have a Bond roll cage with a Marsh fixed back seat. I also have both the standard seat belt and a 4 point harness mainly because it makes the car a lot easier to get in and out of when not at the track (it's CH registered), although I haven't done any events for a couple of years now. Bruce Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I just rang Brown Davis. They can fit a powder coated half cage with harness bar which can be extended down into the front of the cabin (in the future) for $790. I thought that was quite reasonable. It also comes with all the Cams compliance paperwork for your log book. Any thoughts? cheers Bruce Quote
24OZ Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 that's a good price,is it bolt in or weld in? what is the bolt in front section worth, the prices i've had in WA are $900 for the weld in 1/2 cage but $2600 if you want the bolt in front cage as well,it significantly adds to the cost, however only a 1/2 cage is allowed for road registered(not competition with concessionary road rego). Azon Posted March 17, 2007 Author Posted March 17, 2007 I have spoken to a few people and the numbers I got were around $2.5-3k for a full weld in cage with no extension to the front past firewall though... yet to talk to any any workshops - the above numbers are just from people I know. Well nonetheless seems a little expensive so I kep searching for pre-made ones and found this: http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_753931_-1_10775 USD$270 for a 12 point cage specifically made for a 240 sounds REALLy good even after postage from US - now I am just trying to see who can aprove it for me.... 24OZ Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 price sounds good however i'd check on shipping as the package would be way too big/heavy to ship by the cheaper USPS surface economy, this means you would be at the mercy of the private carriers also you would have to weld it all up in situ in the car, tricky job as space is tight....the guy i saw doing one professionally was using TIG and it was a work of art.............for the $900 he charges for a 1/2 cage i'd rather hand over the cash safe in the knowledge it was done right,a bodgy cage could do more damage than good in the event of a collision/roll lastly i've had experience with "kits" before, not roll cages, and unless it's got IKEA written on it be prepared to do a fair bit of custom fitting yourself keep us posted with what you end up doing Quote

Before you spend your dollars check VERY carefully that it will be compliant for both road and any motorsport you will do. If you aren't planning on doing any motorsport I would not bother witha cage because of the hassles in getting it legal. The biggest problem you will have in compliance for motorsport is certification for CAMS. CAMS will need the cage to be FIA compliant. The US runs under its own rules and therefore I would seriously doubt the that the cage you got would be able to be certified for CAMS use. There is also the issue of getting the paperwork that CAMS needs to certify the cage and that the materials used are suitable. Also, with regard to going through the firewall, be very sure of what motorsport you want to do as in a lot of categories is is not legal to extend the cage through the firewall, or to use it to strengthen suspension mounting points, off the top of my head Group Sc is one, and production sports is another, unless the rules have been changed lately. Azon Posted March 17, 2007 Author Posted March 17, 2007 At the moment I am planning to just run the car on random track days just like I did with all my previous cars - so I dont really care about any category rules - just want the car to be allowed on the road and track. As I said I am still yet to speak to any workshop about fabricating a cage - so not going to make any decisions yet. Quote
PZG302 Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 If it's being used for the occaisional track day and a regular driver, personally I wouldn't worry about the cage and spend the dollars on the best suspension and brake bits you can afford Quote

Again, for what you want to do and the planned conversion you should be able to get away without the cage, just seam weld the front when you are dropping the new motor in, won't add to much to the overall cost and get a good engineer to walk you through and explain everything so you can understand the why's of what he wants. nat0_240_chevZ Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 what sort of motor really warrants a "full cage" for race days go the roll bar frame / or a 4 point or something small to protect your head. If your after side impact, front and rear also then go a 12 point or similar. Cannot get these 8 point etc and above road legal full stop here anyways and your eastern states RTA's whatever are far more strict than ours (SA). first of all stop all your wows about the best/biggest and whatever and decide exactly what your after, "your needs", your wants and what is legal etc and meet somewhere in the middle where you'll be happy with. sorry to burn but till we have an idea of this, we can really offer any info advise that you want to hear. also those cages from jegs seem nice, well priced but shipping would kill that. Any other links or whatever you have come across?? nato Quote
