r30 skyline engine v 280zx engine?

i have been offered a good r30 skyline engine l24e for my 240z

where as i already have a couple of 280zx l28e engines.

now i am having trouble making up my mind on which engine to run the l24 or the l28? keep in mind i will be using the p90  turbo head with injection and some boost

which engine is better? I know the l24 revs better but which one can handle more power

please give your opinions

The normal choice would be the L28, however, in the right hands, a L24 will make as much power. Perhaps look into different cranks etc aswell.

Given the engine is the L24e it will be the same base engine that the guys in the US call the Maxima L24e (these L24e engine where used a few JDM models and some other export countries) you might want to look into these carefully as it is my understanding these are like the post 79 L20e and have a smaller journal for the big ends, also they have a smaller little end 19mm vs 21mm (I think the big end journal is 49mm vs 51mm)

 

So I would go with the L28 personally given this might an odd ball L24 that you might not be able to use or swap the cranks/rods easily etc.

actualy i think i have red this some where before i think i wil stick with the l28 and maby stoke it to a l31 and make a monster thanx guys

If it is the Skyline I'm thinking of, the engine won't fit in a zed anyway. The sump is towards the front and the zed needs the sump "hump" towards the back. There's a fair bit of re-drilling needed to modify oil pickup tube etc to make it fit. The only thing you can use is the cylinder head and EFI setup. With the 280ZX L28, its about as easy as it can get!

i already have 2 l28 injection set ups so thats not an issue well at least this decision was easier than the last one i had.

I was trying to decide between l series and rb but i chose the l series because i think there is something more exciting about a big hp l series

Hi, I have done this conversion on my 260, and you are right the r30 skyline motor won't fit, and there aren't pre-drilled bosses as with many other nissan engines.

 

The head swap, however, is a very straightforward process, and if you were going to have both motors out you might as well clean it up, new gaskets, welch plugs etc etc.

 

I basically did the conversion because I got the parts for free (bought the complete running gear for $300, sold of 5 speed stumpy for $250, $50 for shell from scrap metal yard).  I used the L24E factory ECU and air flow meter etc.

 

I got reasonable results with mine, it dramatically reduced fuel consumption however mine is reading quite lean - as bad a 16:1.  I haven't had any issues so far running it on premium pump gas.  It is way smoother to drive, and the electronic ignition is also heaps more reliable than points.

 

However, it runs out of steam at high rpm.  Perhaps the inlet is more restrictive than the 280, or the smaller valves?  Bang-for-buck, it is a good conversion, but I have already aquired an L28E motor that I will be modifying to replace the L26E.
