The starter motor just makes a rapid clacketty sound and won`t engage the flywheel so I tried hitting it with a hammer to free up whatever is sticking but to no avail. Do I have to remove the starter motor and dismantle and clean or relubricate something? Is it a simple task?

Just before you break out the spanners and start swearing - have you checked the battery charge?  I've seen a lot of Rangies with flattish batteries make a machinegun style noise from the solenoid, charge them up and away it goes.

Zeddophile sounds right again! Put a multimeter across your battery while you turn the key; if it goes below 10V, battery is farked. should crank and have about 10.5 - 10.8 V and running with 13.8-14.5.

Gents, you were spot on..... a flattish battery which is now charged up and the whole thing just works fine again.

Thanks
