240ZBUILTBYME Posted January 21, 2022 Posted January 21, 2022 Just wondering if anyone in Australia has done the CD009 350z 6 speed gearbox swap onto their L series S30 or S130. there are a couple companies doing the conversion kits that I know of, Godzilla race works and hoke performance. (which is what zcargarage use) apex engineering has also developed gearbox supports for the swap. seems an interesting upgrade, more gears meaning a more aggressive final ratio can be used improving acceleration without compromising fuel economy or cruising rpm/top speeds. Plus better shift quality and stronger box. Quote
1600dave Posted January 22, 2022 Posted January 22, 2022 (edited) You would need to check up on the "use a more aggressive final drive ratio" bit and see what the 350Z gear ratios are - I have two cars with 6 speeds (S15 box in my Datsun and an MX5) - both use a 1:1 5th gear ratio, so same as 4th in Datsun 5 speeds - you still only have one "overdrive" gear. S15 box does have a slightly taller 6th than top gear in a 5 peed, but the MX5 6 speed actually has a shorter top gear ratio than a 5 speed so the opposite is true - at the same speed, it revs higher in top gear with a 6 speed than it would with a 5 speed (ignoring different diff ratios, etc - my 6 speed MX5 actually has a less aggressive final drive than a 5 speed one to suit the gearbox better). Disclaimer - despite having regularly driven a 350Z, I know nothing about the ratios of the box Edited January 22, 2022 by 1600dave Quote
240ZBUILTBYME Posted January 22, 2022 Author Posted January 22, 2022 (edited) This is from the hoke performance website, gear ratios included: ”I have owned a 350z track edition and now run a VQ35DE in my 240z, both of which used the CD transmission. The transmissions are wonderful to drive, they are very smooth and the shifting feel is direct. The later revision transmissions, CD009, have robust syncros and are capable of handling as much power as most L-Series builds can produce! It is a close ratio transmission which gives a short first gear, great for low end acceleration in N/A when matched with a short rear, I run a 3.7 in my car. Turbo guys may want to opt for a 3.36 or 3.54 to help load the engine down low. All CD transmissions are interchangeable and can be had used for a reasonable price, especially earlier revisions, new transmissions are also available for under 1700 dollars. Gear Ratios: 1st 3.794 2nd 2.324 3rd 1.624 4th 1.271 5th 1.000 6th 0.794” So you are right 5th is 1.00. I know z car garage use a 4.1 diff with their CD009 swaps.
