marty Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Looking for some advice as to what is better a quad cam VG30 single T3/4 turbo or a RB20DET with a Garrett GT3076 Turbo. 5 speed nissan from 300zx or a VL Turbo Gearbox R200 LSD diff 3.9 or a 300ZX Differential Opinions bast on performance AND reliability would be appreciated. thanks Quote
luvemfast Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Depends on what you want to do I guess. Daily driver? Track days? Cruiser? Drag? Are you for overall performance or just a nice car to drive? My 2cents. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 depending on what u use it for but regardless Vg30det will have more tourqe and more power. prob bit heavier than rb20det but prob better balanced it will use more fuel than Rb20det. aftermarket support is lot larger for the RB engine RB engines prob bit easier to work on. Gearboxes. all depends what 300zx gbox it is. if out of the vg30dett than its lot stronger than rb one. but also lot heavier and lot more expensive to replace if it does die. R200lsd or r230 if out of Z32. R200 fairly expensive if long nose. short nose are fairly cheap and z32 R230 are reasonably priced also bit stronger. the Z32 is also short nose. all depends what car we talking about. if anything but Z32 the diff will not fit in earlier model Z without some big mods. that includes Z31, S130, and S30. marty Posted June 19, 2008 Author Posted June 19, 2008 I guess even though I hate to admit it a daily driver would be most suitable, but I don't want a car that is easy to drive either I want to be able to feel it twitch. The rb20det apparently has 210kW at the rears and the Vg30det 198kW so would the rb's fuel consumption gone though the roof? Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted June 19, 2008 Moderators Posted June 19, 2008 Just a quick note on the diff's; if I were you, I would be after a "clutch" type LSD center not a Viscous LSD center which I think the Z32 diffs are. They wont take too much punishment when the heat builds up internally. Viscous centers "go off" when too hot. On the street its no prob but on the track you will need to cool it somehow. Just my 2.2c inc GST...heheh good one Quote
RBZ 260 Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 on full bore there prob wouldnt be much difference in fuel consumption. but when driving normaly the rb should give you better fuel economy its only a 2L. mine roughly returns 12L per 100km with mixed driving. im bit heavy footed expecialy from the lights when P plater commodore drivers think they fast. preety much happens on daily basis. for a daily the RB is probably better choice. if u have more plans on updating the VG can return big HP not to say that RB can't. common mod for rb20 is to fit rb25 internals making it rb23. bit more torque but still quick reving of the rb20. as for diff. clutch type are prob bit harder to find. but thinking of the Z that has the RB20det i think that one allready has clutch type. Lynton Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Well my 2 cents worth the RB motor is a perfect daily driver that gives a bit of twitch when you ask of it and costs way less to overhaul in terms of labor, is far more user friendly to tweak and play with in my opinion and they are rock solid motors with timing chains not belts. Hunter Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 go the VG30DETT if the engine will squeeze in with both turbos. I just got rid of a Z32 TT , It went like the clappers could not imagine it in a lighter car. Quote
mayhem Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 The rb20det apparently has 210kW at the rears and the Vg30det 198kW so would the rb's fuel consumption gone though the roof? rb20 will get that if you spend money on it there is no way its getting there stock, i got a rb 25 and so far we got 187kw but we are having issues... but we should see 210 if im lucky.. thats stock and done to many km ... but shit im shutting down VE SS,s like they missed a gear ... Lynton all true besides the last part. RB do have belts just like the VG. i think some of us here are missing the point. Marty i think is looking at buying one of the two cars. one has a rb20det conversion (the black one on one of the other post on the forum thats currently for sale) and thats not a stock rb20det. also im assuming hes looking at a VG30det powered one too. my assumption its the red one with gray simmons. also mentioned on this forum. getting 200kw at the wheels with RB is not hard or uncommon. few things are needed but not to break the bank. as mayhem said with his rb25 leaving VESS behind. i had a run with one of this modified ones rolling start at 80kmh (gives lot more advantage to the big v8) and i kept up with him with my dicky fuel pump. now the fuel pump is sorted and the car pulls very hard all the way to red line. now im after a rematch all this still not tuned. but hopefully in next two weeks ill get everything checked and ecu remapped. as for fuel consumption. a modifed turbo engine when driven normaly would give you better fuel economy than stock, ive proven that in my s14. also u need same amount of energy to make same amount of power. 200kw 4cyl should use roughly same as 200kw v8 when both are at that power level. fuel difference happens when engine is idling or lower rpm. takes less fuel to turn a 4cyl than a v8 at lower rpm. as a daily you cant go wrong with RB20det. not sure what condition and price on the vg powered car but the rb20det one is sure a nice car. marty Posted June 20, 2008 Author Posted June 20, 2008 That was the plan I had my heart set on the one with the Vg and was going to get it at a really good price, however I had to wait a little longer than I wanted to and got back to the guy after a very long time only to find out that it got in a crash, got sold as a wreak and it is now on that site was on posted on this site. Guess I will think a little harder on the RB since it is more likely to be straight. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 i was wondering which one of the vg30 was for sale. but i guess the same one i was thinking off. also mentioned previously on few topics. i guess if it has been repaired properly theres prob nothing wrong with it. lets face it at least 90% of the cars on the road have been at some stage in a bingle. if u think its less you got to be joking. older cars are prob almost 98% been in an accident. if its fixed properly theres nothing wrong with them or you be struggling to see if its ever been damaged. its the dodgy ones u got to be carefull but you can see the dodgy ones from mile away. i used to work in a crash repair and visited lot of damaged auctions so know fair bit about it. marty Posted June 20, 2008 Author Posted June 20, 2008 No, I was talking to the bloke who owned it previously about October 2007 and was thinking of selling it, but I had problems with my own car but didn't so I decided to wait, a mouth turned into 10 and I was just hopping he still had it. At the time he said I cold have it for 14500 without even negotiating!!!!!! REALLY KICKING MYSELF NOW I just do my homework on cars before I do anything else. Cryin Shame Just the set up I wanted too Don't know were it is now. If anybody knows of any 260/240's for sale in good nick at a good price I am interested! Quote
