Hi all, having some wiring dilemmas. There is a lot of loose wiring from the previous owner which i'm not sure where it should connect. Any advice or photos of your wiring would be great. Car is a 1973 Australian delivered 240z.

ISSUE 01

There are 5 connections from the turn signal switch but only 3 connections available at the harness. The green/black & green/red obviously should connect to the matching wires on the connector block. These are for the front indicators, and i'll need to change their male terminal size to put them into the connector block. However, what does the red/white connect to (from the harness)? And what do I do with the other 2 spare wires from the switch (white/black, white/red)?  FYI, I have a US market switch. Not sure if they have more wires than the Aus cars.

ISSUE 02

I have 2 excess wires dangling near my flasher unit. I need to swap the white cables with one another as the wrong white cable is in the '90 degree' connector block. Any idea where the spare white and green wires need to connect/what they are for?

ISSUE 03

I have a connector block with 4 wires sitting loosely under the dash. The colour of the wires are white/red, red, red/blue, and red/white. There is live power to the white/red and red/blue. There is also another pair of loose wires dangling nearby. Colours are black and red/black. Not sure if they have anything to do with one another.

What year is your car, and what market was it sold new in?

Later S30s have more wires in their looms than earlier ones, as over time more accessories were added. The 240Zs and early 260Zs were more 'bare bones' than the late 260Zs.

Issue 01 - turn indicator switches - switches wiring connectors are generally different across 240Z, early 260 and late 260. Plus, some switches include a stalk flasher, others not.

Issue 02 - FWIW there is a flasher can for the indicators, another required for the hazard lights. Perhaps?

Issue 03 - On my early 260Z there are redundant wiring plugs here and there, for fittings either not required for its intended market or due to its bare-bones specifications. Suggest you check out a wiring diagram for your year of S30 to see what it could be for.

Sorry - I forgot the most vital piece of information! Car is a 1973 240z, Australian delivered. The indicator switch I purchased was a US market switch for a late 240z. My original Australian switch didn't have the high-beam unit and it was also not working properly, so I bought the rebuilt one from ebay.

I have a wiring diagram for 1972/73 US/Canada cars. I couldn't find the wiring diagram for AU market cars. Any chance you have a copy or know where I could access one? The wiring colours seem generally similar but there are a few differences I've noticed.

I'll see what diagrams I can find. I have US/Canada, and UK, IIRC, may have Aus in my stash of info, my car is NZ-new so I've found the late UK 240Z close enough.

So after testing the whole electrical system what exactly doesn't yet work on your car? No point in investigating redundant connectors if there's nothing for them to do.

I just pulled my indicator switch to bits to fix it. So keep hold of your old one, it might be salvageable. My car's a 73,  I'll have a look tmo. My high beam operates from the indicator stalk, where did yours used to?

Thanks Gilltech. If you happen to have an Aus diagram that would be great. Aside from needing to swap the green/red, green/black wires from the indicator talk into the connector block, everything works fine now. My indicator had been intermittent and I've just worked out that it was because the turn signal was running through the wrong connections. I fixed that last night and there are no problems with any other of the electricals.

The only other unusual issue I have is that the ammeter gauge jumps from - to + at random times. I wasn't sure if those loose live wires could have something to do with that.

My high beam runs through the tall white block on the back of the indicator switch in the first photo, and connects to the connector block where you can see a set of 3 red wires. My original 73 indicator stalk didn't have that for the high beam which I thought was odd. I still kept the old switch for parts.

The turn indicator switches simply wear out over time so owners jury rig and bodge up fixes and substitute parts from other cars if they can't find Z replacements either new or used.

Yes don't throw away any of the old electrical parts.

Thanks ilbert. Much appreciated. Think I have identified that the problem with the indicator switch is that the US market switch I am using has 2 additional wires compared to the Aus market switch. Looking at the wiring diagram it appears that the front and rear indicators of US cars each had their own individuals wires coming from the switch (4 total), whereas the Australian market cars only had 2.
