Kent Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 (edited) Hi Guys, I have been searching for a set of MK63 vented calipers to upgrade my 1970 240Z. Main reasoning for the MK63's is that they were factory fitted options for the 240Z, and therefore (along with FIA approval) shouldn't require an engineers certificate in NSW (as toyota S12/13's would). Since reproduction calipers are now available in Japan (still pricey, but more easily found), am i right to assume that these reproductions would be classed in the same way? https://www.rhdjapan.com/parts-assist-m-speed-mk63-4pot-caliper-brake-kit-s30-s31-b110-gc10-kpgc10-pgc10-kgc10-kpc10-pc10-gc110-gc111-gc210-gc211.html although i would like to get some originals, the added benefit is that these are all new parts, and no need for a $$$ rebuild kit for a 40 year old set of calipers) i am guessing that it would be similar to getting some remanufactured protex/PBR calipers locally for a VS commodore etc. ? Administrators gav240z Posted April 28, 2018 Administrators Posted April 28, 2018 I am not sure, but I'd imagine it shouldn't be an issue. I don't even think it should be a problem with the Toyota 4 pots. Been done many times. Lots of documentation exists to show MK63 calipers as optional parts. Quote
Cozza Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 Considering they were an option from the manufacturer, I would imagine they would not require an engineers certificate but, I recommend you talk with your local RMS to confirm if legality is something you are concerned by. To be honest, I would be very surprised if anybody except an s30 enthusiast would pick they were not the original brake setup. On another note, I have been researching another vented rotor option whilst maintaining the original caliper. I have found a couple vented rotors that need a small amount of machining to suit the 260z hub and have an appropriate offset to use the original calipers but with a spacer placed in between the caliper halves. This option would strictly need engineering certification but will also look quite original so probably difficult for a non s30 enthusiast to pick it. I expect it to be a bit cheaper and lighter than some of the other options currently used but will see how we go. Quote
dat2kman Posted April 28, 2018 Posted April 28, 2018 The Toyota S12's are a straight bolt on. If you reckon these need engineering approval, then, so will the MK63's! BTW, both the S12 and MK63 are made by Sumitomo, and bth come in vented and non vented rotor varety. gav240z 1 Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted April 28, 2018 Administrators Posted April 28, 2018 I'm not sure on pad availability for Toyota Calipers but MK63s have project mu pads available. Quote
