fluegel Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 Just bought an MSD blaster 3 coil from Autobahn. Can I fit it to my 1976 260z which has stock standard points ignition and if so will it work without messing up the old distributor and do I remove the ballast resistor. It all started because I couldn't find a replacement ballast resistor, so they sold me the coil instead because it doesn't require a ballast resist. Quote
Enzo Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 Hi, I have no experience with MSD blaster coils but if you are running breaker points in the distributor you need to use a ballast resistor. The Ballast resistor limits the amperage or current flow to the coil while the engine is running, which extends the life of the coil and breaker points of the dizzy. When the key is on the start position full current is run to the coil and this increases voltage to the plugs for a better start. Once the engine starts and the key goes back to the on position current is diverted through the ballast resistor which lowers the current (voltage) to prolong the life of the points and coil. I have a 1976 260z and still use the ballast resistor with a Bosch GT40R coil and Crane XR700 instead of points. Hope this helps. Merry Christmas. David. nizm0zed 1 Quote
blu260z Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 Hi I have the MSD blaster 2 with the 280zx electronic distributor and it works great. However I believe the blaster 3 has a male outlet on the lead end so wouldnt suit the standard ignition leads and to my understanding is they suit a non ballast resistor style setup. Your best bet would be to switch it for a Bosch GT40R GregTas 1 Quote
GongZ Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 I did some Googling and it seems that the ballast resistor is 1.6 Ohms. This one on eBay (it's even in Adelaide!) should be suitable; https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SINGLE-COIL-BALLAST-RESISTOR-1-6-OHMS/263309523686?hash=item3d4e787ae6:g:6mkAAOSw42JWDeL8 Quote
fluegel Posted December 26, 2017 Author Posted December 26, 2017 I will try and return the coil for refund or one of the coils with the ballast resist ie a MSD ballast 2 PN8200 or buy that new resistor on ebay. I am running a Bosch GT 40 . The existing ballast resist disconnected because of loose terminals Quote
