aircobra Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 i think i worked why a set of standard points would not fit in my distributor - it is because of the play in the shaft has anyone replaced the bushes /bearings in one of these? i can't find anything on the net Quote
600Z Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 I have but I turned them up in my lathe out of bronze and worked no problem. Quote
aircobra Posted August 30, 2017 Author Posted August 30, 2017 so they're just plain bushes originally, not bearings? does the shaft itself wear out? how did you press them out? Quote
600Z Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 Just a plain bush, like a spigot bush in the end of your crankshaft. You would be able to tap it out from the other end using a long pin punch or a steel rod I'd think but I turned mine out as at that time I didn't realise it was replaceable. The shaft was shiny but no real wear. Do you specifically want to stay with points? Quote
600Z Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 Actually i remember now the one I did the bush for was what looked like a steel bush, sorry was a while ago. Quote
aircobra Posted August 30, 2017 Author Posted August 30, 2017 not fussed on the mech. points, that's what there at the moment. are you saying that if i convert to el.points, shaft wear won;t cause problems? Quote
aircobra Posted August 30, 2017 Author Posted August 30, 2017 is there option for me to buy this and replace electronic bits with my existing points http://www.ebay.com/itm/Distributor-Electronic-Cardone-31-617-Reman-fits-75-76-Nissan-280Z-2-8L-L6-/121658434487?fits=Make%3ADatsun%7CModel%3A280Z&epid=76725910&hash=item1c536863b7:m:mKEdlgV_8uToSh7GD3O-DGQ&vxp=mtr Quote
aircobra Posted August 30, 2017 Author Posted August 30, 2017 i think these are the bushes right here http://nwdatsuns.com/viewtopic.php?t=1102 the guy doesn't say where go the replacements from ;-( Quote
600Z Posted August 31, 2017 Posted August 31, 2017 Shaft wear will always cause problems. That's a pretty good write up on rebuilding one but yes a shame he didn't say where he got the parts from. I have seen in other posts where guys but complete new aftermarket 280zx units which might be the way to go in the long run. Flick through some of the old posts and I'm sure you will come across them as you wouldn't be the only one that's been in this situation. Quote
aircobra Posted August 31, 2017 Author Posted August 31, 2017 $60 and problem solved? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Electronic-Ignition-Conversion-Kit-for-Datsun-Nissan-240Z-6-cyl-Hitachi-Dist-/311931024273?hash=item48a089b391:g:8AsAAOSwwbdWJn8v Quote
260DET Posted August 31, 2017 Posted August 31, 2017 If any replacement ignition system relies on the distributor shaft for it's operation then that shaft must be true and operate within wear limits. Quote
aircobra Posted September 12, 2017 Author Posted September 12, 2017 ok, here's the deal 1. a couple of local rebuilders, such as performance ignition want around $330 to 350 to rebuild the distri. that means machining the shaft and pressing in new bushes 2. can get a reco'd 280z electronic off ebay( i know there are a couple of threads on this ). about $180 shipped http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Distributor-Electronic-Cardone-31-617-Reman-fits-75-76-Nissan-280Z-2-8L-L6-/292235053493?epid=76725910&hash=item440a9109b5:g:QhYAAOSw5UZY99dy 4. same, but $130 non-electronic http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Distributor-Point-Type-Cardone-31-606-Reman-fits-70-73-Nissan-240Z-2-4L-L6-/252467435360?epid=75279823&hash=item3ac83b5760:g:uJ4AAOSwSzRZO3JT what's the deal with dual points? 5. can get one from someone on the forum or the wreckers ( although all of these will be 30 years old also) 6. this one from what looks like a L26 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NISSAN-L2600-DISTRIBUTOR-OEM-22100-V2600-A129/130971312478?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649 but i'm not sure that the curve eg the mech.advance and the vacuum spring is setup the same as Z, given that it comes off a fat, lazy sedan. same cost as above, but brand new (although chinese made) any suggestions? paulhempshall@yahoo.com.au Posted July 22, 2021 Posted July 22, 2021 Perhaps this topic is still relevant. Just had my 280zx distributor reconditioned by Performance ignition https://performanceignition.com.au/ Cost $380 with a new cap. The main problem with the Dizzy was the vacuum and the mechanical advances (it is 41 years old). Performance ignition were great. Quick turnaround and the Dizzy now looks and operates brilliantly. A very noticeable performance improvement. Well worth the investment. Quote
