aircobra Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 just working on more wiring and looking at the FSM (BE section), it shows a pair of "passing relays" in line just after the light switch. all the threads say that the headlights are wired directly from the switch, so the wiring goes from the switch to the fusebox. is this a year-specific mod that appeared in the later cars eg '72 on? i'm looking at the FSM that says "S30" on the cover Quote
aircobra Posted April 2, 2017 Author Posted April 2, 2017 did bit more digging . different versions of the S30 manual show Out of standard manual 1. standard - 2 Passing relays 2. US and CANADA - NO passing relays Out of the "supplement" 1. EARLY basic version for US - one relay 2. LATE basic version for us - NO passing relays All shows "ACC" relay - in between the defroster switch and the glass. This must be under the dashboard somewhere Not clear on the logic here at all - sounds like there are variations on the years and the geographies is the logic that some countries use their headlights more than other? 1600dave Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Different rules regarding lights required in different countries ?? Just a guess. Quote
Cozza Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 (edited) Can't comment on earlier cars but my 9/72 has 2 passing relays. The button is on the end of the indicator stalk. 1 relay is on the passenger kick panel the other is on the drivers kick panel. Edited April 3, 2017 by Cozza Quote
aircobra Posted April 3, 2017 Author Posted April 3, 2017 do they look like this? http://i44.tinypic.com/309t1dy.jpg http://i39.tinypic.com/2zhk2ft.jpg these are wires from my car https://www.flickr.com/photos/62957688@N08/33655995252/in/dateposted-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/62957688@N08/33682907041/in/dateposted-public/ Quote
d3c0y Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 I always thought the pass button on the stalk was a 260Z thing. My 7/73 model doesn't have it. Quote
aircobra Posted April 3, 2017 Author Posted April 3, 2017 ok, the colors match. i think this is the twin passing relay circuit - the colors match. since my relays are missing, i'll have to use the generic 4 post black ones Quote
aircobra Posted April 3, 2017 Author Posted April 3, 2017 not sure, maybe someone swapped it over. however if you look at the circuit, there's definitely there for some versions. i'm not sure why there's 2 of them - one for each side? someone must know this Quote
Cozza Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 Can't see your pics on my phone. Maybe post direct to this site not to a photo bucket type site. They are 4 wires so yes simple 4 terminal relays. It's been about 5 years since I liked at the wiring diagram and that circuit but from memory the reason there is 2 relays is that 1 relay supplies power, the other supplies the earth. Quote
aircobra Posted April 3, 2017 Author Posted April 3, 2017 ps. the horn relay has a couple of labels on S, B and H by the looks of it. which wire goes to what terminal? doesn't say anythingm in the fsm Quote

aircobra Posted April 7, 2017 Author Posted April 7, 2017 bought a couple of $5 Jaycar relays . see if they do the trick Quote
aircobra Posted April 18, 2017 Author Posted April 18, 2017 al good, except that now i have double relays, 4 all together to be exact. i'm sure this has been covered before, but i don't understand the wisdom of having relays ONLY for flashing high beams and not for the headlights anyway, i have these 2 factory replacements and the standard ebay chinese $10 H4 loom.for the main circuit sitting at the front of the car. so basically its double relayed and it all seems to work the only exception is the small button on the tip of the indicator stalk - which is some sort of a "flash" anyway, to get the whole thing going, i need to juggle the twist control, the flash button and the high beam switch ( pull on the indicator) Quote
