Wiring Setup For Race Car?

Sports Sedan so minimum wiring, other than the engine lights and wipers are it I think. So considering a DIY kit, the only odd requirement is power for the electric steering. Decent fuse and relay box plus a dash switch panel, separate start button and ignition and fuel switches. 

 

Any kit or parts suggestions? I do have basic wiring experience.

Thanks Peter, the engine has it's own OE harness and a Haltec ECU already wired up so I guess that all that's needed there is power for the ECU which would be 'ignition' I think. One thing I've found is that race switch panels are invariably ugly and expensive, searching egay brought up a suitable marine switch panel and of course a big red start button which lights up when pressed. Switch panel will be ignition, fuel, wiper and lights are far as I know.

I would suggest work out how many circuits you want to wire, and from what you are saying it is around 4 to 6, so a generic aftermarket harness such as a painless 6 circuit would be the go.

 

Or, work out what you want, draw up a diagram, get some rolls of 10 and 20 amp wires in different colours and away you go, but look at things like the actual lights you need. I will be using cheap china ebay led lights that draw no current, but are the same "spec" as standard to meet the rules, but no relays needed due to low current. Also look at for lights wiring them in series and run the circuit like this:

Power > Switch > Light one > Light two > earth.

Only downside is current draw will be the addition of all the globes, but with cheapy led lights shouldn't be an issue.

 

I would also suggest circuit breakers over fuses, if mounted on an easy reach panel, if one trips then just push it to reset and continue on and then look at the circuit later.

You need a sensing cell switch behind the 2 o'clock spoke on the steering wheel. The switch should be wired to the brake lights and used 1/2 second before you apply the brakes, or in the middle of a sweeping corner, or at the same time you plant your foot to exit a corner!

 

Alternatively, if you have a cover on the steering wheel the switch can be positioned directly under the cover at the location where the thumb on your right hand rests.

 

PS. Do you need a rear rain light switch?

Use box/caravan trailer 7 core

Run one legth to rear of car, one length for front.

Use relays for switching heavy loads ie headlamps, wipers.

Use a seperate much heavier twin fig 8 for fuel pump.

You'll need to ascertain the load for the electric steering, it may need relays and seperate feed.

What's a "twin fig 8" Jason? The trailer core wire sounds like an idea but the ebay loom has a fuse box and provisions for relays in a box which can be dash mounted. Yes, have to find out what the load for the electric steering is, it will require it's own mini loom I think, 40-50 amps draw seems quite common.

seems like the easiest solution is to make something.
Thats what i'd do anyway.
Trailer wiring makes excellent wiring looms, comes in 5, 7 and 12 core.

I saw this on my facebook feed recently, looks pretty cool

100A solid state switch panel, customisable switch labels, 8 circuits, wire it and go.
It'd even eliminate a lot of relays and other crap out too.
this would be real nice for a racecar, because racecar.

$130 for a 8 circuit wiring loom, too good to ignore. It would be a different thing if a road registered car was involved but it's not, weight is really not an issue, circuit breakers would be cool but once again simplicity rules. It's going to work something like - main power on, ignition and fuel on, hit the big red start button

Don't forget the proper cut switch and remote access from outside the car and from the driver seat.
