L28 Long N42 Suitable For Big Bore

Hey guys,

I got this block from and I was going to do a stroker motor but purchased another z car instead

It has been crack tested and only has a small crack next to bolt hole but is ok has been sonic tested at Les Collins Racing  

and on closer inspection he found that the engine no at some point had been ground and re stamped (quite poorly) L28346562

I spoke to vic roads and the police and they both informed me that it was not worth re-issuing an engine number so this motor is

 

ONLY SUITABLE FOR RACE USE...

Motor can be bored to 89-90mm

Crack won't be an issue most blocks have small cracks in the same spot

Could it be registered with the current (re-stamped) engine no?

That would depend on whether the "real" engine with that number currently exists in a registered car somewhere. Or if it ever was to turn up and the legal owner of the engine with that engine number attempted to register it.

 

Then the RTA / Police / etc may potentially get involved and try to work out why two engines exist with the same engine number. And then ask why yours has obviously been re-stamped.

 

I guess the question isn't whether it can be registered, but whether you think it is worth the risk of being caught with an illegally re-stamped engine as its probably bordering on potential "re-birthing"......

As mentioned I spoke to both the police and Vic roads and that both said it wouldn't be worth going through the process of getting it re stamped (as mentioned)

So it is only suitable for RACE USE ONLY!

If you want to get a new engine no you have to send the block to the police they will scan the section to see what number to was originally but it could take a long time

That is why I never bothered with the process

As was sometimes done, when an engine was destroyed/blown, a Reman, or wrecker supplied engine was fitted, and, due to laziness, the old number on the block would be filed back enough, and it would be stamped with the same number, as what came out of the car.

 

Car then changes ownership, often many times, and no one is any the wiser.

You could use it in a road car, today, but you would want to ensure that it isnt listed as a "flagged engine number" finding that out in every State is not an easy task.

 

You'd fit it, trot off to Inspection, they'd shine a torch, confirm the as stamped number, is same as on your paperwork, cross referenced to the chassis/body number, etc, and it'd get regstered.

 

Has happened many many times.

I'd be mre concerned about the crack, it's nothing that a judicious applcation of Selleys Kwik Grip down into the threaded hole, and oozed around the shaft of a head stud wont fix.

Seen that, plenty of times too!
