So I am posting this with some regret, this was perfect before I put it in my luggage and came back from the US. However after several flights around the US without issue on my return leg from LA -> Sydney my bag must have been buried deep down and the weight must have caused issues and cracked the plastic trim surround on it (right hand side). I was so annoyed! It survived 40 odd years and got damaged with me. I should have removed the face and kept it in my carry on. Lesson learned the hard way. The crack extends up to the tune / antenna switch - You can see in the photos.

Good news is that the transparent piece in the middle with the radio bands is good and that will save you money if you order a replacement face here:

It is missing Antenna switch, but these are much easier to come across and cheaper than the earlier Hitachi Unit switch (vertical). You can get a new faceplate or try and repair this 1.

Anyway photos do the talking.

Sold as is where is, non tested unit. I was originally going to install it in my 72 240z, but decided to keep my car AU market spec and will go AM radio.

Price: $300 AU

That sucks about the damage, I would have been mighty pissed at the airline >:(

Good luck with the sale.

Was this ever available in 240Z's here as an option Gav or was it US market only? I am assuming it will plug straight in to a 240Z AU market car, is that correct?

I am not sure, I just looked at it and can see a positive power plug, but no negative earth? I assume maybe that goes through the antenna? Definitely odd... I've never seen a 240z without an aftermarket radio already installed so I'm not sure what the correct loom plug looks like, I can only assume they were all lobbed off or modified over the years.

So I can't be 100% certain.

I also noticed the tuning mechanism isn't moving when I turn the knobs, not sure what's the cause maybe I'm not using it right?

I would say that the negative for the unit is achieved through metal casing, you will often find screw and nut on the back to hook an earth wire to.

Weird, in my FD RX-7 1 day I was driving and I noticed smoke come out from the dashboard I pulled over right away as I thought it was on fire. I realised pretty quick it was the head unit in the car. After pulling it out I couldn't figure out how in the heck it was being grounded. I found the antenna cable slightly melted. So I wired in a ground on a new head unit (same brand and plug) and haven't had an issue since then.

So this is all new to me.

Earthing via the unit chassis or casing is the reason why a lot of car audio gear will say "suitable for negative earth vehicles only"

Poor earths are one of the most common reason reasons for issues in auto electrics.
