Looking for a gear stick for my 240Z. My 5 speed gear stick has been cut down and I'm going back to a more original look.

Cheers,

Jon

Here's what is in there at the moment.

It has heat marks around the bend in it so it may not be original.

What year is your 240z? That looks like it was modified for an early S30z (with original 71A) to accept a later gearbox (71B and 71C). This is because the earlier cars had the gearbox lever hole set further back than later cars where it was moved forward.

I have a 1971 240z. It definitely needed the bend in it to get through the hole in the trans tunnel. The speedo is also incorrect, so your theory sounds pretty plausible Gav.

Is there an easy way to ID the gearbox? Is there a difference between the gearsticks on the later gearboxes (71B vs 71C) or would either of them do the job?

Anyone have a spare they would be willing to part with?

Thanks!!

You can tell the difference between a 71A and later gearboxes by looking at the bell housing section. It looks quite different.

71A Gearbox shown below out of an early 240z. The gear selector also looks different. The yoke in the back of the gearbox is the non-slip on yoke type (it's a flange you bolt up to instead).

It's difficult to tell the difference externally with other gearboxes (71B and 71C) and there have been discussions about oil filler position (left or right side) indicating if a gearbox was for an S30Z or another car like 240K, at this stage (40+ years later) nothing can be assumed.

If you decide to put a regular gearstick in your S30z you will probably find it won't clear the transmission tunnel hole. Of course the way around this and what many have done before is cut the transmission tunnel, however that is cutting up an early car and in my experience this is also why so many early consoles are cracked or cut just after the fuse/ash-tray lid, personally I prefer the bent gear lever if you can live with it?

Thanks Gav. I'd rather not cut the trans tunnel, so I might try to weld some extra length onto my current gear stick to get it back close to the original length.

Thanks for the info!

Your stick, pictured above, is for a Type B gearbx.

At some stage, your original Type A box has been remved, and a type B box ( newere) has been fitted.

The bending f the gearstick s required, as the hole in the floorpan f the early cars is set back to rear a little, this s due to the slghtly lnger length f the type A bx in the car.

It has been bent, using heat, to get the top f the stick back, so t "falls" to hand easier.

F it has no cracks, and still "feels" k, its fine to use it still.
