Hello. I am nearing the end of preparing my car for paint and wanted to get people's advice on paint for under the guards.

I have used KBS coating on the inside of all the bare metal panels following the prep directions and am very happy so far with the result.

My issue is that the guards are coated in the factory black etch primer that you normal just use a scuff pad before paint, but I'm not sure if the KBS coating will stick.

The primer is in perfect condition and it seems like a step backwards to remove it.

Does anyone know what is used on the under side when replacement panels are fitted to modern cars?

Any suggestions would be great.

Ok thanks, I was thinking there would be some special paint for under the guard because of chips etc.

Planning on painting the outside of the car in HOK 2k so do you think I should just continue with it everywhere? Or is the ppg better for wheel arches etc?

I just used thinners to wipe off the black primer and then used the kbs rustseal paint then some textured flexible stoneguard paint.

I found over the years that the factory black primer can peel and craze, so i no longer trust it. Its more used for storage to stop corrosion than anything i believe

That black 'primer' coat is very thin & breathes while the panel is in storage so the panel will eventually rust just sitting.

Best to remove that black s**t primer & prime on bare metal with the good stuff, don't just paint over it as you don't know what it is therefore no-one will be able to guarantee that the coat applied is compatible.
