funny thing i had a red porsche trying to hunt me down on the way home... did i leave a supprise facial expression on him when i pulled away finishing with a whooooosh before going back to 60.

though love porsches my dream car but i do like the underdog datsun/nissan putting the prestige in shame. they were killing them in the 70s and still do  ;D

as for how many looks you get well mate had a 911 cabrio with wide body and that turned lot of heads while on the road... but even with my bus s30 it turns just as much for fraction of the cost and it quicker  :P

back to the topic.

depends what you after an ultimate street machine that kills porsches and ferraris or a elegant cruise car or a realy interesting daily.

you eaither buy a good z for 12-18K and enjoy it straight away after some poor bugger spent 40k

or like some of us here enjoy grazed knuckles greasy hands and enjoy working on them to save a few bucks and get the result you want and take pride in your own work. or if u lucky enough you have a decent daily job that can finance it and let someone else do the hard work. ;D

hope i didnt step on anyones toes , sorry if i did.

I personally love the fact that I can work on it myself. Although I hate the greasy fingers and cut up knuckles you get. I love the feeling of accomplishment you get from fixing something that wasn't working right before. It feels even better when you thrash someone at the lights :P.

Just fixing the advance mechanism on the distributor transformed my car from slug to rocket.

Funny thing is since being away I keep thinking about slapping the triple 44's on her and slapping a bit cam in it just to see how quick she can go with a warm L28.

I agree with gav, it's great to know things have been done the way you wanted them done.

back to the 911 discussion, I love datsuns and have only owned one non nissan/datsun car which I got sick of after a few months and sold.  However I was very impressed when a mate brought his completely standard 1982 911 SC to Baskverville for a play one day and did high 1:05 lap times on crappy street tyres.  The guys who have been to baskerville on the targa tour will know that this is not messing about!  As much as I love my Z's there is no way that one would do those lap times bog standard.

When I raced my car around Baskerville a few years ago I got a 1.05:2 in my Zed. Fastest on the day out of around 35 cars. And I must say Mat Freeman's Zed was around half a second behind me in his 240 with triples on. I should be quicker now I have done some extra mods that I won't bore you with. But I do agree a bog standard Zed wouldn't do a 1.05 but I think we are more talking about 60s + 70's Porsche's that go for <35K here.

A drive we went on a few years back with the NDSOC a few cars got left behind for what ever reason. Matt in his 240Z was racing through the Black Spur trying to catch up to us with a Porsche 911 (Who was on the drive with us, a friend) was trying to keep up with him. Cut a long story short he came off the road and wrote the thing off. Admittedly he was a little inexperienced. But he did say it was the fastest he had ever driven and loved it for the 5-10 minutes before the sad end. He still hasn't fixed the car.  :(

well when i finished my rebuild in 1990 i stated i stopped counting the cost after $20,000 but since then i really dont want to think how much ive spent but as ive already owned my zed 21 nearly 22 years cant see a reason to stop now just luv working on it making it my own special zed

really luv what some of the gear usa companies are now making for zeds some very trick parts

I fully respect anyone who takes the time to enjoy a zed and save it from the  wreckers

well when you've owned a car for that long, it doesn't seem like so much to spend to keep her going and looking nice. Considering the amount of money you could lose in that time buying new cars and watching their value plummit
