Graedat Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Hi all, finally got my 300zx turbo cv shafts fitted with adapters from Ross at Modern Motorsport. Wow he sells quality products. Very impressed indeed. Quote
zed240au Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 look good ross certainly makes some good gear i ended up sourcing adaptor plates from victoria and welding them to 28 spline stud axles but yours sure look sweet mick Quote
Graedat Posted January 22, 2008 Author Posted January 22, 2008 Its a great conversion. Very easy to do too. Much less vibration from the rear end now! Quote
Graedat Posted January 22, 2008 Author Posted January 22, 2008 $420 but there was a stuff up with freight at his end and he refunded the $100 postage. Pricey i know but very well made and never had a breakage as far as i know. So $320 landed. Thats just for the flanges, you will need to source the cv shafts which are rare as hens teeth here. Add another $400 for the shafts and more in labour if you cant shorten them yourself. Easy to shorten them saves some cash anyway. Total cv shaft conversion cost me $800 Quote
Graedat Posted January 22, 2008 Author Posted January 22, 2008 By the look of my photos i need to get a hoist and clean up under my poor old Z. Quote

I have been wanting to do this conversion for ages. Quote
620Z Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Nice. I always reckon they are lighter than the standard "U" Joint's which translates to more power as well. That is a beefy exhaust system you have there. I have 530hp and sticky tyres and never broken mine. So I figure they will never brake. The tyres will slip before any breakage. Quote
NZeder Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Is that 300zx Z31 Half Shafts? I didn't think these needed to be shortened? Gav it depends on your cars suspension setup. If you search and search hybridz you will find some have issues and some don't. Most that have issues with the Z31 shaft length are with early 240z. Most of the guys in the US that do Ross's conversion do them on 280z which we know is our 260z and they have different rear suspension (ie taller and this might change the angles etc) and they only have to flip the CV cage to ensure they fit without binding. A mate here in NZ has does this on his 71 240z (race car with lowered suspension which might also play a part - not many of the US guys lower there cars a much as us downunder as most of us build our cars for circuit/track stuff and most in the US build for drags - those that have had issues seem to be those in the US that build cars for circuit/track work) and we found that flipping the cages was not enough (well it was after also grinding the end but we are talking 2mm from bind = not enough) and to install the CV the rear suspension on the short side needed to be undone and pulled out to get the axle in. Anyway long story but 1 custom shaft was made for the short side and the normal short side shaft was used on the long side without flipping the cage/race. Graedat what did you need to do to your shafts? Quote
Graedat Posted January 23, 2008 Author Posted January 23, 2008 I just flipped the cage, as you say its only 2mm to stop any binding. Quote

Total cv shaft conversion cost me $800 can you send me the details to order please also how do you spot a set of the right halfshafts in a pile.....i think i may have a set i presume the adapters are for the 260/280 stub axles,28 spline,i think my 240 ones are 25 spline i heard a rumour ross was doing a conversion for the 31 spline 300zx stubs after someone sheered of a 28 spline one??? the stubs are obviously the weak link especially if you are using used parts....who knows what abuses they have sustained or how far they are from failure when you re-use them anyone know if new stub axles are available anywhere?? also heard a few drag guys swearing by having them cryogenically treated to strengthen parts up,apparently it realigns the molecular particles (it's not expensive if it works).......anything to stop a wheel coming adrift if you snap a stub at high speed :-\ Quote
Graedat Posted January 23, 2008 Author Posted January 23, 2008 http://www.modern-motorsports.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=32&products_id=46 Try this, but before you buy make sure you can get the shafts. I hunted for a while to get mine and not cheap. Ross is short of them in his area too. PS my car is in his rides section also. Cheers Graeme Burke Quote
