blu260z Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Hi guys taking a look over the 260z today though I would check the spark plug lead resistance as I was chasing a missfire. I pulled out the service manual to get the leads right on the distributor cap followed the order, cranked it over pop back through the carby,Telling me 180deg out. But how I havent moved the distributor. I swapped the leads to the opposite number on the distributor and it fires up. How is this possible? Its like the dizzy is 180deg out but its not. Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted April 22, 2015 Moderators Posted April 22, 2015 Could the dizzy be set to TDC on the exhaust stroke instead of compeession stroke ? Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 23, 2015 Moderators Posted April 23, 2015 Depends if anyone has ever removed the drive tongue from the original distributor. Best way is to get the crank to TDC at #1 (both cam lobes for #1 cylinder forming a V) and check location of rotor button. Should almost be pointing forwards towards the radiator. If its pointing to the firewall, its 180 out. Quote
blu260z Posted April 23, 2015 Author Posted April 23, 2015 Thanks guys I will have a look over the weekend Quote
blu260z Posted April 26, 2015 Author Posted April 26, 2015 Ok had a look over the weekend and with cylinder 1 at TDC the distributor rotor is pointing at the point that should be number 6 plug. What could be 180deg out? The distributor can only go 1 way because of the groove on the end of the shaft. The car runs great just the leads are 180deg out Quote
Zedric Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I'd say the oil pump has been removed or replaced at some point, and put back in 180° out, since the dizzy can only go in one way and is driven by the pump shaft. After stripping and cleaning my dizzy and replacing all the ignition components my car wouldn't start, so I set the engine to #1 TDC (you can see #1 cam lobes through the oil cap hole) and noticed the rotor pointing to number #5 instead of #1, so I moved the leads on the dizzy by 1 place and it fired up straight away. So mine is out 60° and I wasn't going to pull the oil pump just for that, I'll wait until I need an oil change or rebuild the engine. Quote
blu260z Posted May 6, 2015 Author Posted May 6, 2015 That sounds spot in mate. It doesn't really bother me just confused me Quote
