Hi guys,

Have never touched an L series motor before and I think it's time for me to learning in preparation for the 260 resto.

The car has been sitting in the shed for around 20 years and gets the occasional start up once in a while. The motor runs like crap and barely gets up my drive way. I think the carby and motor needs a bit of tuning. I've found info on the web on how to check and refurb the SU carbs but not much on how to check valve clearance, in particular how to set #1 cyl to TDC before you can check the clearance. Is there a good service manual with detailed explanations and photos on this ?

Hi,

Just a bit of info for newbys. If you are going to store a car long term, add some fuel stabiliser to the tank. Fuel goes off after a couple of months and the engine will run like shite. Putting stabiliser in will supposedly keep the fuel fresh for 12 months. Available through Supercheap, Auto-one etc. I recently drained a tank to a 280zx that had not been started for over a year, and the fuel stank like cat p#ss. :o

Just a thought.

Oh Lurch! I've got more hair than that. :)

Thought that I would try one of your responses.

I'm sitting in the office totally bored looking at Jenvey throttle bodies and trivia.

Have a good weekend all.

It's all good Boost. Get yourself a service manual off ebay. All the relevant info is there. If it has not been run for a while. Change the oil, replace the fuel and filters, flush the radiator. Top up the oil in the carb dampers. Don't worry about valve clearances and timing till you have done the other things and got it running. Keep it simple. If it still is running rough, just work through it one problem at a time.

Have a good weekend.

David.
