Why don't you try the Pertronix system Vivek? Works just the same and they are not as fragile as the 280ZX Dizzys.

Might just try that. Wasnt sure how those system are.

Is this the one you recommend? You havnt had any issues with them?

Yep that will work. Plug and Play item you just set them and forget. The base plates in the 280ZX Dizzy is fragile and often break. With this setup you won't have that issue.

With the Petronix ignitor do you get the full 12V spark? From what I saw in a video posted recently you retain the ballast resistor. Is there any pro's / con's to each set up?

I've got a spare 280zx distributor and agree with Mark they have a fragile base plate that often causes problems with the advance mechanism etc..

You can leave the ballast resistor on but i prefer to remove it, it will work both ways but better to have the full voltage. The best thing about having electronic ignition is there are no parts that touch to create spark so it's more accurate but we all know how much points suck. Sure makes tuning those carbs easier too.

Sorry I meant pro's / con's on the 280zx distributor vs converting an earlier distributor to remove the points?

I understand that points suck as a general rule.

My bad Gav  ;D I think the best part is the fact the old points type dizzys don't have that fragility to them and the cost is competitive too. Not sure if one produces more spark than the other. The Mallory units are Nearly $800, i have one here but it's bolted to Andrews Stroker. I would love to give it a spin as it looks trick as.

Re: the 12 volt - my understanding is you run the lower resistance 1.5 ohm coil with the pertronix kit if you retain the ballast resistor.  that way you get the 12 volts on start up but don't need to touch your tacho?
