Is there any interest in reproduction chassis plates ? I reproduce these for the old Mercedes and since my 260z plate is not too great, I am looking to replace it. I have found a company in the US that sells replacements, but only for their model - as per the photo below. To have one reproduced with GRS on it, they want an order for 100 units, and I don't think we would be able to sell that quanitity here. I can have them done individually, with the chassis number stamped (or printed) but will have to get them set-up initially - all of which means that they will cost more than the ones from the US. I estimate that it would be around $52 each, postage included.

These are some of the plates I am having produced in Germany. The chassis numbers are printed in these examples, but can be metal stamped. Don't worry about the distortion - it's just the angle of the photo !

One of the guys over here had his plate redone. I don't remember the exact details, but I believe he took it to a printer who reproduced the black parts as some sort of sticker. I think he then cleaned off the plate to remove the original black, and stuck the sticker over the top.

I'll ask next time I catch up with him.

I will be having mine redone properly by the people that make the Mercedes (and other) plates for me in Germany. There are quite a few varations as I have discovered though - some minor, some not. For example, on the US plate I pictured below, there is a line between the Car Number field and the box beside it. On my original (1974 2+2) plate, there is no line, as you can see on the following photo.

Aegean.  I have a 260Z coupe.  Can't read it to save myself. If you have progressed or can get them done count me in for 50 or 60 dollars or whatever for a true repro.

My plate is not much good to use as a template.  Can you help out?

Unfortunately I don;t have any other photos. I had one - not sure what model, but I had a computer crash a while ago and lost it.

There are plenty of cars around, so it shouldn't be hard to get one from somewhere. Anyone like to post a photo of their plate ? It would be good to have a library of all years and body styles as I know there are variations.

It is fairly similar, but I don't think the original is brushed Aluminium - at least mine's not, and I wonder why, if they are going to reproduce it, that they wouldn't make it the original size ! As they comment, It is identical to the original other than its size as it could be a little smaller.

V8Datto - can you measure your old plate and see what the size is ?

Can do. I am just trying to get my head around the size mentioned by mtopxsecret6. He mentions his is 100 x 78, but didn't say what year/model his is. If you're reading the thread, can you let us know ?

In the meantime, send me a PM with your chassis details and we can discuss off line.

Thanks for that. Is it the same as the one I posted on Nov 17, or the same as V8Datto's ? You will see on mine that the vertical line dividing the left and right fields only goes as far down as the top 4 lines, whereas the other one extends all the way down.

I would be keen too, had some overspray on mine, rubbed it off anf the black paint came off too :o :'(

Q. does anybody know, would it be illegal to get my new engine no and capacity (and power output) written on it instead of the origional info? i dont see why it wouldnt, its a japanese issue plate, not an aussie one. so shouldnt be required for rego purposes.

It's probably the same as mine, with the vertical line running only part way through the centre. They seem to have changed in the transition form the 240 to the 260.
