Ferrari GTO value discussion by Chris Evans.

So the talk about Z-car values recently here: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,13832.0.html - had me thinking about the Ferrari GTO's and an article I read some time ago by Chris Evans.

Now I'm not saying to expect any kind of return on your Z in the near future or have it turn into your retirement fund, actually I don't think that's likely to happen any time soon or possibly in our life times.

 

But what I do find interesting about the article is that many people didn't think these cars would be worth much money.

 

You could pick up a GTO for £1,500 at 1 point, and then there is the story of the Aston Martin DB5's that were picked up for a song £15,000.

 

On the flip side many people also thought many muscle cars were going to be worth big money and the market did kind of pop at 1 point.

 

What I find interesting in the case of the Z-cars is that for a long time they were not considered worth much money, now that supplies are dwindling and the cars are getting older and many are rusted buckets, values are starting to climb. Hence I think now is a good time to pick 1 up, if you can - because at some point 5, 10 years from now we will look back at the prices they command now and think "god that was cheap".

Perhaps speculation in regard to classics will reinvigorate the market, perhaps not.

 

The late 80's did us all a favour by making uneconomic restorations make sense and hence, make a bunch of classics which otherwise would have disappeared live another life.

 

I'm starting to see more and more talk in regard to car values outside the US muscle scene, i.e. euro etc. The 911 guys seem besotted with it.

 

Although it would be nice for the value of my z go up, I wonder if current owners are more concerned with financial value or finally being welcomed or recognised in the world of "collectable" classics.

 

If that's the real root cause, then I'm not sure I'm that worried about it..

I bought my zed for $800 5-6 years ago.

So, no matter what, as far as im concerned with mine, i won.

 

lol, not that i'll ever sell it, so its kind of a moot point, but its nice to see the values climbing, even if it does seem to be slowly.

and i paid $8000 for my bus this time last year, so yes... i dare say the values are indeed going up.

 

The bloke i bought my car from, has about 10-15 zeds left in various seat arrangements and conditions. he has been slowly selling them off for the better part of 10-15 years.

 

He took out his super about 25 years ago and snapped up 50 between himself and a friend, split them, and stored them, some bad ones he made 2 out of 1 etc etc.....

 

Im sure to bet he probably paid under $1000 easily for mine, he bought it 10 years ago and it sat in the shed, now im the schmuck paying 8k for it.. and its a BUS!

 

He also had some nice 240's that he was asking in the 20k price range......

 

 

Not a bad way to spend part of your superannuation!

 

Maybe i should start buying up all the S13 silvia's that are selling for 1500-2000 clapped out drift pig shells? as the guys over on the other forums i frequent seem to think they are the next big thing to increase in value (i don't agree as much)

 

Or better yet, i should buy up all the Ke70's, as ive seen them selling for 2-4k now, once again, drifting crowd... if i recall you could buy them for $400 not too many moons ago...... I wish i had the space..... buy 100 KE70's and in 30 years retire!!!
