WA240Z Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 Hi All, I am in the middle of over hauling my suspension on the 240z. I purchased a set of new OEM bushes from Mossy, thanks mate, but now I am a little stumped as to how I remove the old inner, main, bush of the moustache bar. The existing bush looks to have a shoulder top and bottom so it cant be pressed out, where as the new bush has only a shoulder on one end. I must be missing something. Really appriciate some advise. Cheers Billy. Quote
pauly_adams Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 just burn out the rubber and cut the metal collet out with a hacksaw Quote
mossy Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 Here is a link Billy of how others have put the new one in http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/engine-drivetrain-s30/37821-oem-bushings-moustache-bar.html but to get the old one out I think one of those flared ends have to be cut and then the bushing has to be pressed out. The new bushing gets pressed in and the side that isn't flared gets pressed down, see the above thread as someone had a tool made up for it so it looks nice and neat when pressed in. Quote
Retro Z Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 I drilled a series of holes in the rubber all the way around and then pryed out the centre and then carefully cut a slice into the metal outer shell/casing with a hacksaw and used a punch and hammer to fold the metal shell inwards and then it popped right out as the slice breaks the tension of the metal shell. WA240Z Posted October 5, 2013 Author Posted October 5, 2013 Hi Guys, That is excelent info from you all. Really apppricate it. Cheers, Billy. Quote
luvemfast Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 I've seen the burning technique/method advised before. I'd stay well away from doing this! It's a half assess way of doing it. Heat and steel don't mix, you're changing molecular structures. Has the potential to have deadly consequences. DO NOT DO!!!!!!! Quote
Scottz Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 Cut a piece out with a hacksaw. It will then easily come out. Take your time, you only want to cut the bushing and not the bar. Quote
pauly_adams Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 I only burn out the rubber with a buthane torch, I don't heat the metal itself up Quote
jamo240 Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 Here's my two cents worth.... If it's a road car, Z's have so much diff noise transmitted to the frame I would not replace rubber with urethane anyway...it will just transmit even more noise! I am contemplating double isolating mine (ie diff to moustache bar, then moustache bar to body) to shut it up. Voided rubber bushes all the way! But, if urethane is what you want to do, then why not cut the bottom part of the bush right thru (ie slice it off either top or bottom where it abuts the moustache bar), and then turn up a pilot that centres in the bolt hole and picks up the diameter of the bush casing and just press it out on a hydraulic press (often a socket will do this job if you have a good range of them too). Presto! a bit of setting up, but easy as pie once you've made up a tool Cheers Jamo Quote
mossy Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 He doesn't want poly bushes Jamo, he bought OEM bushings from me, but your right with the noise as I put poly bushes in my 240 and after I few drives went straight back to factory rubber and its MUCH quieter Quote
jamo240 Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 That's good to hear Mossy...rubber is better for a road car. I would still use the same method to R&R them though. Cheers Jamo Quote
WA240Z Posted October 6, 2013 Author Posted October 6, 2013 Cheers Jano, that is exactly what I plan to do, slice off one end and then press it out. As Mossy said I am staying with rubber. I will also need to turn up an adaptor to help press the new bushes shoulder over. Just couldnt work out how the bush came out without the advise. Thanks guys. Quote
