koopa Posted September 2, 2007 Posted September 2, 2007 I read in another thread about how some people are using rollers and rust paint to paint their cars and some of the results were pretty good. We decided to go ahead and try it as a temporary paint job. We were planning on re-painting the car in a different color at a later date but for now, we'll use this economical method. According to the thread I read, a paint job could be done for about $50 Canadian. We went over budget and spent $70... haha Below are the pictures after sanding it down with 100 grit, then 200 grit, and then 400 grit. It was sunny outside so my brothers took the opportunity to take some pictures. When you are standing there in front of the car in person, it was quiet blinding to look at it. It was VERY WHITE!! koopa Posted September 2, 2007 Author Posted September 2, 2007 Oh right, we didn't sand it down to bare metal as that would be too much work and this is only a temporary paint job. We did it in the underground parking. The first four coats were not all that great. We didn't have the proper lighting and therefore there were a lot of lines in the paint job. The 5th and 6th coat went on very nicely actually. We had the proper equipment and the previous coats were a little too thin. The 6th coat went on about 24 hours ago. We are going to be doing a final wet sand tomorrow and then buffer it. We might skip the buffering if we find that we may need another coat. I will post pictures of the 6th coat, and then the wet sanding, as well as the final results. Quote
koopa Posted September 8, 2007 Author Posted September 8, 2007 Getting orange peels sucks. It's turning out pretty good. The roof, hood, and front fenders are good. Door and rear quarter panels need some work. Sorry for no close up pictures. I'll get around do it soon. Although the roof and hood are looking good, the buffer is still causing some "swivels"?? Too powerful?? Quote
modular9 Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 when i painted my car ( note in queensland it is illegal to paint your own car in your shed - i had the cops called out to me as well as a QLD govt inspector ) the swirls were down to me attempting to get more time out of the buffer pads than i shoudl have. the buffer paste got all clagged up and swirls appeared . great job there though. sexual_sushi Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 note in queensland it is illegal to paint your own car in your shed - i had the cops called out to me as well as a QLD govt inspector is it really, do you know y? and who would call the cops out on you if you were? speaking of which had the cops out last night... guess the new neighbours dont like noise :S haha Quote
modular9 Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 sexual sushi : i have a compressor and it is a small 2hp version. I made sure i was in the time limits for noise and it was closed off from the neighbourhood so the noise was negligable. I also have an anally retentive ex cop for a neighbour who somehow can afford porches etc etc. Cops must earn a lot of money here Anyway it is considered a commercial operation apparently if you are using a compressor to paint your car at a home. The fine was double the price of the whole paint and materials. Were you making noise outside the times that you are allowed ? And anyone else sometimes feel we are worse off now than we were in the 70's? Quote
zedevan Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 attached is a pic of my car painted with a layer of plain white, i thought i'd see how it came up as it will be what i do if the colour goes badly (put it next to my bro's white 96 caprice and is very close even in terms of colour, although i'd ultimately like more of an off white like what hondas are known for). i then sanded it back wtih 360grit (i really should of gotten the door flatter as there are a couple of low spots, but i just want to try to mix up the colour i like) i'm still playing with the colour, this is only the first coat of colour and i think its to light. (http://www.autodrome-cannes.com/IMG_0006.JPG is my aim, but also whats on some new citreons and smart car) the door still has some low spots but i can't b bothered fixing them right now, just wanna the ratio for the colour i want for now. I'm also playing around with adding penetrol in with the paint to see how it effects it, then sometime before my car is back on the road i'll paint all of it lol it should be noted that the more coats the deeper the shine, and the darker the colour the more it reflects (why white is easier to paint and therefore my backup plan), but its sure to polish up better than the current result, as with that guy with his mx5, ( http://www.miataturbo.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5199&page=5 shows the results the best probably). depending on how this holds up, it will still be a "temporary" paint job as i'd love to have it some metalic colour when i have the money... gilltech Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 You got fined for painting your car in your own shed? WTF! Where in Qld are you? I had a scan thru a list of Qld laws on nuisances etc & couldn't find any comment on painting, commercial activity, compressors etc other than noise only being permitted during particular hours for the latter. Was it a local area by-law you infringed, & was it actually explained as to what exactly you did wrong? A bit rough to fine you without a warning being issued first. And if you're painting just one car for yourself & obviously aren't running a painting business doing same I can't see how they can class it as a commercial activity or whatever.?? Quote
