280zx electrical issues and rewiring plans

Hello fellow Z-men,

 

So I have an '81 280zx manual NT.

 

Since registering last month I have finally been taking it out for the odd night spin and found that when I turn and my signal flicks off the dashboards lighting turns off temporarily then comes back on, AND THEN every 6 turns or so the headlights go off, the fog lights tend to stay on but the head lights are out - sometimes if I signal left and right a bit they come back on and if not I just play the waiting game.

 

Another electrical (I'm assuming) is the red check engine light is on, and when I do the check it says brake lights but they're working just fine.

 

I was thinking of taking on the huge project of rewiring the whole car, because a lot of the wires look pretty shotty, someone suggested a fuze could be blown. I located the fuze box under the stearing wheel and checked, they're all still good, one was missing but I replaced it.

 

So any tips/pointers?

 

Can I get it professionally re-wired? Roughly how much would that cost?

Also check your earths... and it's spelt "fuse"

fair chance its your indicator switch causing the lights to go out, mine randomly turns on my high beams if the headlights are not on, I have cleaned it once prior and it fixed it, I get a tail light indicator on my test and there working fine, I just live with it, I have tried everything to fix it checking wires etc but seems to be related to the computer it self

Agno is 100% correct... bad/missing earths can cause major headaches. Also check/re solder connections on the headlight and indicator switches. After about 20 years and plenty of heat cycles, solder can develop dry joints which look good but don't connect well. With the brake light warning, theres usually a current sensing circuit that if it detects less current, thinks theres a globe blown..make sure the right wattage and type globes are fitted.
